Why Is Deion Sanders On The Cover Of ESPN The Magazine?

Because he might be just as relevant now as as he was ten years ago. Debating his intentions is one thing, but these days, nobody can deny his influence. As a mentor to as many as 100 of today’s biggest NFL stars, Deion has become the football version of basketball’s Sonny Vaccaro and Worldwide Wes.

Like those two, he’s a polarizing figure among the world of amateur and even pro football, with a reputation that’s shrouded in mystery and, fair or not, a good bit of controversy. And this week, ESPN The Magazine attempts to shed some light on just what, exactly, Deion does.

It’s a good read, with several anecdotes that help explain what has made Deion’s new role so perplexing to so many people. But rather than excerpt bits and pieces, we’ll just say: Go read it. In the meantime, enjoy this photo, and remember: It was the 1980s. All bets are off.

Prime Time!

The story was decent at best. The reason I say that is because every time something was stated good about Deion, there was the proverbial disclaimer.

“Some say Deion is a Saint to inner city kids,”(here’s the disclaimer),“but there are others who just think he does it for the spotlight.” “Deion has a good base that he stays in contact with & mentors,”(disclaimer),“but there are those who wonder just what…”!

WTF? I’m not surprised though, this is a pattern in the media.
