Texas Technicalities: Craig James Denies Role in Leach Firing, Son Calls Shed Treatment "Funny"

Mike Leach has been fired, is now in the news for being a coach (NSFW language), and has no chance of getting his job back. Because of that, we haven't checked on the hit courtroom drama As Texas Tech Turns in a while. I wonder what's going on in Lubbock?

Craig James, whose complaint of mistreatment against Adam led to Leach’s firing in December, denied claims he had business ties with university administrators and described his role as limited in the coach’s firing during his nearly four-hour deposition Saturday afternoon in Tech’s administration building, said Dicky Grigg, an Austin-based lawyer for Tech.

...

“You can’t say that Craig James influenced the decision, but you can say from early on he was angry and wanted him fired,” he said.

So being angry and threatening to sue the university doesn't count as influencing the decision? Okay, then. How about what the person who was actually punished thinks?

Grigg said Leach also denied Adam James even had a concussion and pressured a trainer to make him practice, a claim Leach’s attorney denied.

“That is backed up by virtually no facts or evidence,” Ted Liggett said, adding Leach “treated (Adam) like he’d had a concussion from the moment he heard he had a concussion.”

Liggett said the younger James’ testimony made light of his Dec. 17 isolation treatment, quoting the player as saying “being placed in the shed was funny.” Adam James testified he felt no threat of physical harm and didn’t believe Leach’s actions that day warranted his firing, Liggett said.

So one side says Craig James had no influence on Leach being fired and another reports testimony from Adam James that indicates he had no great issue with his punishment and didn't want Leach gone.

At what point does someone from Texas Tech fall on a sword and admit that the administration had tired of Leach and suspected that a trumped-up charge of mistreating a player would be a good way to get him fired for cause? Because I can see that twist coming when Leach's side starts talking about a settlement.

Tech needs to "Pony" Up!

Craig and his son need to be given complimentary tricycles so they can ride out of Dodge together…father and son!

Everyone knew that TT wanted Leach out and thought this was the opportunity to do it.  TT is going to have to pay for their lack of diligence and hastiness.  Employees, no matter how much they are paid, always get the benefit of the doubt.

sissy james admitted his wussy but lied and he cost the best coach tt has ever had or will ever have. How about sissy james be stripped of his scholarship made to pay back the money spent on his room and board and pay back the money for his free education he has recived

I don’t know where the truth lies and neither does anyone else except those involved.  I do not think however that Leach is the pristine , honest and forthright fellow everyone wants us to believe.  If it were possible to lay aside all prejudice for a moment I think Leach would be guilty as charged.

Mr. snowhill, I agree.  Leach’s actions, his odd interviews, his strange team speeches (not for the swearing, by the way), and his indefensible decisions regarding the James kid all add up to someone who thought he could do anything.  I think this lawsuit is about being right more than the money.  He wants the University to pay him publicly, so he can say, "See, I was right all along."He should have no trouble getting another coaching job at this or the pro level.  There are many teams that do not care one bit about integrity.

i agree with wjbtriplets.

craig james should be banned from sports reporting, and his son should be clearly labeled the punk/liar/team wrecker that he is.

putrid, the both of them.

Granted, Leach is eccentric, egotistical and has an odd style of coaching. I suspect Pete is right when he says this is about more than money.

But none of that alters the fact that he is an effective coach and was wrongly terminated. Tech can pay now, or pay later…but they will pay.

please get this over with so leach can get his big settlement. that way when iu fires it"s loser coach after another lousy year it won’t cost them as much to hire him, that is if they are smart enough to at least ask if he is interested. trust me when I say unless he shoots somebody we won’t care that he cusses his players as long as they win more than 3 games a year like the current and previous losers they hire do.

Up next: Texas Tech lawsuit against the James.

Here’s hoping that Leach sticks it to Tech as HC for A&M next year or in Colorado.

Ark, your post sent a shiver up my spine, mainly because it is a plausible scenario. A&M and Colorado are both sleeping giants. Can you imagine what Leach could do at a school where he could recruit the best players?

I am not sure he would be a good fit in College Station, but I am sure the Aggies would love to have him. If Sherman does not win at least 8 games this year, he could get run.

Leach in Boulder is a great fit, and that job will be available.

Metalhead, I am not saying that Leach would not come to Indiana, but he is more of a West Coast/Southwest guy. Besides, if your administration was offended by Bobby Knight, I wonder how they will feel about Leach. The man is a maverick.

Beliefs:

Frankly, I think Adam James was faking his concussion.  Problem is, a doctor, especially a young doctor, isn’t going to risk a malpractice suit from a known whiner by saying he’s full of it.  And once a doctor makes a diagnosis, even if it’s wrong, the coach is stuck with it.

I think what really irked Leach about Adam James, on top of a history of daddy’s interference and a faked concussion Leach had to live with, was Adam James showing up on the practice field in civvys acting as if nothing had happened and he didn’t have a care in the world, especially if he was interacting with the other players.  "Hey bro, I just faked a concussion and got away with it.  Maybe you should try it if you’re tired or don’t like Leach."  Adam James is mendacious – meaning, he’s a habitual liar.

I think Craig James was indeed an interfering asshat who did indeed scream for Leach’s head.

I think Tech’s admin was scared of the things James could do, and that James really did influence Tech’s administration’s decisions to suspend Leach and then to fire him.

I think Tech’s admin was indeed predisposed to fire Leach if they could get out of any penalty clauses, because Tech’s AD had lost a power struggle with Leach during the previous contract negotiations.

Finally, I think Leach should get the money he was due if he were terminated "without cause," because the stated reasons for termination were a subtrefuge.

Oh yeah, I’d love to hear what Adam James’ testimony was about the cellphone video and the room he was in when he took it.

O M F G
http://sportsbybrooks.com/craig-james-pr-firm-blogged-using-pseudonyms-28037

There are a bunch of interesting tidbits.

First, Adam James admitted under oath he went to a different room (an electrical closet off the main room) to film the "conditions" he had been placed in, then sent them to his dad.

Second, Craig James admitted he hired a P.R. firm, who released the video under fake blog pseudonyms, when it looked like public opinion was going against the James family.

Third, Craig James’ actions in doing his best to get Leach fired were based at least in significant part on the fraudulent video.

What an absolutely loathsome family.

Lou Holtz:  Who won the game?

Craig James:  er, ah, er, ah…I ran for 200+ yards against BYU in the 1980 Holiday Bowl, er, ah, um…they did.

If this turns out to be a farce ESPN needs to cut Craig James loose.
