The Yankees have had their eye on Cuban shortstop Adeinis Hechavarria for a little while, now. However, according to George King of the NY Post, the 21 year old Hechavarria will sign with the Toronto Blue Jays for $10m. Why Toronto instead of New York?
Hechavarria, 21, was leery of Derek Jeter’s impending extension that will keep him at short for the foreseeable future.
The contract is a four-year deal, according to Spanish-language Terreno de Pelota. Hechavarria reportedly prefers Toronto in no small part because it provides him with the quickest route to the Majors. The shortstop has been considered one of the top prospects on the island, comparable to Boston's recent import Jose Iglesias only with what some say is a better bat. Toronto, with a glaring need in the middle infield, is a natural, if unexpected fit.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control recently verified Hechavarria's age, identity and residency, "unblocking" him and allowing him to sign with a Major League baseball team.
