Boom-Shaka-Laka! New NBA Jam Trailer Is Here, And It's Gloriously Old School

We already knew NBA Jam is making its triumphant return in 2010, but we didn't know what it was going to look like. Enter the game's new trailer. I'm sure you could have guessed NBA Jam would be a little more arcade-y than its simulation counterparts, but I expected it to be cleaned up a fair amount.

Boy am I glad to be wrong:

The new NBA Jam is basically the same game I grew up playing sans the Seattle Supersonics (remember how good the Detlef Schrempf/Shawn Kemp team was in that game? If NBA titles were contended in a Jam Universe, Kemp would have twice as many rings as he actually has children - Zing!)

The good news is that in lieu of hyper-real characters, the developers just superimposed various photographs of the players onto computer animated bodies. The effect gives the game that delightfully campy feeling that made the original a classic; and that I feared would be impossible to recreate with modern technology. The bad news is we still have to wait until December to experience it.

Smart move to release it in December. You know everyone will have this on their Christmas list. It looks awesome. Can’t wait. Sonic 4 is coming out in 2-D as well this year. can’t wait for that too!

I can't freakin' wait

I had like a two month winning streak on this game when I was 13!

On a side note, best blog I have read on why the NBA needs a hard cap…and why the Lakers have won so many rings…

Boom-shaka-Laka and Old School

Nice blog. You got me to join SB Nation so I could respond. Great site. Thanks.

I did want to add some history. You young folks think that “boom-shaka-laka” refers to a bodacious slam.

Since I am old school, I’m going to learn you something.

The phrase originates [perhaps] with a great song from Sly and the Family Stone, sometimes heard in the sports arena, called “I Want To Take You Higher.” This was the 60’s after all. Ask your parents about it.

Check out the video:

You will recognize the song.

The lyrics:

[Freddie:] Feeling’s gettin stronger
[Larry:] Music’s gettin longer too
[Rose:] Music is flashin me
[Sly:] I want to take you higher
Baby baby baby light my fire

[All:] Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

[Freddie:] Feeling’s nitty-gritty
[Larry:] Sound is in the city too
[Rose:] Music’s still flashin’ me
[Sly:] Don’t ya want to get higher
Baby baby baby light my fire.

[All:] Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

[Sly:] Harmonica solo
[All Repeated:] Higher!

[Sly:] C’mon light my fire
Want to take you higher

[All:] Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

[Freddie:] Feeling that should make you move
[Larry:] Sounds that should help you groove
[Rose:] Music still flashin’ me
[Sly:] Take your places
I want to take you higher
Baby baby baby light my fire.

[Freddie:] Guitar solo

[All:] Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka

[All Repeated:] Higher!
[Sly:] Let’s take you, do you wanna go, etc.

[Cynthia:] Trumpet solo

[All Repeated:] Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka, Higher!

[Larry:] Bass solo

[All Repeated:] Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka, Higher!
[Jerry:] Sax solo

[All Repeated:] Boom shaka-laka-laka Boom shaka-laka-laka
