Update

Paulo Filho Off Bellator XVIII Card, Replaced By Jay Silva

After roughly a week of rumors that Paulo Filho would not be able to face Hector Lombard in their scheduled Bellator Superfight because of Visa issues Bjorn Rebney (Bellator CEO) said the fight was still a go on Saturday:

“I’ve been on the phone with all the appropriate people and we’ve got everything in line.”

Rebney today spoke to Filho’s representatives, who said that Filho is traveling from Brazil to the U.S.on Monday and will have his pre-fight medical paperwork completed the next day. But there is a Plan B if Filho fails to materialize.

“We’ve backed ourselves up; we’ve done everything we needed to do in protecting the sanctity of that event, but my hope is that he shows up,” Rebney said. “I think Hector Lombard deserves this fight.”

Unfortunately the situation continued to change and Filho is not going to be able to make the fight.  UFC veteran Jay Silva steps in to his place and will take on Lombard, the current Bellator middleweight champion.

Silva is 5-3 in his career and is on a two fight losing streak that saw him bounced from the UFC.  It's certainly not the test for Lombard that Filho would have been but at least Hector will be staying busy.

Bellator Confirms May 13 Bout Between Hector Lombard And Paulo Filho

Sergio Non at USA Today confirms the previously reported bout between Hector Lombard and Paulo Filho:

Hector Lombard’s first 2010 fight for Bellator Fighting Championships is official.

Bellator today officially set a May 13 date for a non-title bout between middleweight champion Lombard and former World Extreme Cagefighting champion Paulo Filho.

A clear minded Paulo Filho taking on Hector Lombard would be a tremendous fight with almost as much meaning as any middleweight bout outside of the UFC.

Original Story

Paulo Filho v. Hector Lombard In Bellator

From Tatame.com:

Former WEC middleweight champion, Paulo Filho will have a chance to win one more title in his career. TATAME.com learned from several sources that the black belt will face Bellator tournament champion Hector Lombard at May 20.

Lombard has fought 18 straight fights without a loss, but Filho would be his biggest challenge since dropping a decision to Gegard Mousasi in 2006.  Lombard dominated the first season of Bellator, winning with three TKO stoppages including a brutal display against finalist Jared Hess.

Filho will need to show up in the right mindset for this fight to really have any meaning through. After starting his career 16-0 and looking as dominant as almost anyone else in the sport Filho's career started to take some sad turns.  A scheduled rematch with Chael Sonnen for FIlho's WEC title was canceled as Paulo checked in to a rehab center and was also battling depression.  Several months later the rematch was on and Filho spent the majority of the fight not attempting anything offensive and by the final round was looking around the cage and appeared to be seeing/hearing things that were not really there.

Following the WEC stint Filho went to DREAM where he gave an inspired performance in armbarring Melvin Manhoef in the first round only to then not show up for his scheduled fight at DREAM.12 which was again linked to substance abuse.  The Brazilian began fighting for Bitetti Combat where he picked up two wins before withdrawing due to personal problems, deciding to go ahead with the fight anyway, and then not showing up for the weigh ins.

Despite all this turbulence, Filho is sitting on an 18-1 record with the only loss coming when he was seemingly out of his mind against Chael Sonnen.

A fight between Hector Lombard and a healthy Paulo Filho could be a really meaningful and great fight.  Let's hope for the best.

There has been no date announced for the bout.
