Take those coonskin tails dangling from your hats and use them to dab away tears of heartbreak: West Virginia's beloved Mountaineer mascot is passing the torch to focus on her schoolwork for the remainder of her time at WVU. Rebecca Durst is something of a hero of mine; donning all that leather and picking up a gun and wading into the fray of Morgantown is not a task for the faint of heart. She's also adept at tangling with local riffraff:
While Rebecca certainly exemplifies the Mountaineer spirit, she's not the first woman to blaze this trail. Natalie Tennant had that honor in 1990 ... and now serves as West Virginia's Secretary of State. Something to keep in mind when your little girl requests a Davy Crockett lunchbox.
