Casual Hoya: After Georgetown's Loss, It's Time To Reevaluate John Thompson III

So much for the Big East being the dominant force they are perceived as.  So far today, the Big East has suffered a close win with Villanova narrowly beating Robert Morris, then upset loses where Washington beat Marquette, Old Dominion over Notre Dame, and now Ohio over Georgetown.

This was not just a loss to Ohio, but rather it was a thorough beat down as the Bobcats were in command from the midway through the first half until the final buzzer.  Ohio was not even expected to be in this tournament let alone win a game.  They were 7-9 in MAC play and were the ninth seed, and they ended up winning four straight conference games to get to this point.

None of the Hoya players stepped up except for Chris Wright, who had 28 points, and Greg Monroe, who ended up with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists. However, SB Nation's Casual Hoya believes now is the time to take a second look at John Thompson III due to his lack of tournament success:

Now for the elephant in the room.  John Thompson III needs to be reevaluated.  Doing well in the Big East Tournament is one thing, but to lay an egg this badly on national TV in the first round of the NCAA Tournament is another.  Our last three seasons have finished 2nd round exit, NIT, 1st round exit.  It pains me to say, because he has done so much for the program in terms of bringing it back to prominence, bringing in good talent, etc, but at the end of the day, he is judged on his tournament results.

Some expected Georgetown to take the next step and make a deep run in the NCAA tournament and return to their once proud place among the college basketball elite, but the Hoyas will have to wait another year to try to get back on top.
