Providence, RI (Sports Network) - Melvin Goins provided 15 points and four- three pointers, as sixth-seeded Tennessee held on for a narrow 62-59 triumph over San Diego State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
J.P. Prince also recorded 15 points, while Wayne Chism and Bobby Maze each scored 11 for the Volunteers (26-8), who are making their fifth straight tournament appearance.
Tennessee will tangle with the 14th-seeded Ohio Bobcats in the second round after their upset of the Midwest's third seed Georgetown, 97-83, on the tournament's opening day.
D.J. Gay had 16 points for the Aztecs (25-9), who won nine of 10 entering the tournament and captured the Mountain West tourney title to garner an 11 seed.
Kawhi Leonard posted 12 points and 10 rebounds and Kelvin Davis scored 11 in defeat.
