Michigan Fans Are Quaint, Scared Of The Dark

↵

↵You probably don't know this since you're not a Michigan fan and ↵therefore the idea of being outside at night does not terrify and amaze ↵you, but ever since the biggest games in college football started ↵migrating to night kickoffs the idea of playing a night game at Michigan ↵Stadium has been a cultural war, on par with abortion. Entire sections of ↵the state aren't talking to other sections because some guy wrote an ↵op-ed in favor* of the idea. ↵

↵

↵It seemed like a moot point under previous athletic director Bill ↵Martin, who muttered things about safety and lights and the city of Ann ↵Arbor being prohibitive hurdles to the idea. Yeah... it took the new guy ↵all of two weeks to figure ↵out the logistics there: ↵

↵
↵⇥

↵⇥"We know how to string lights and we know how to work traffic in ↵⇥those conditions," athletic director Dave Brandon said ↵⇥Thursday. ↵⇥

↵
↵

↵Ohhhhh. You point lights places, and then you plug them in. Maybe the ↵plug is really really big because the lights are really really big, but ↵it's the same principle. Michigan will play Notre Dame at night in 2011. ↵Commence foofaraw. ↵

↵

↵Later Brandon staked a claim for Most Interesting Athletic Director ↵In The World when he said "I don't worry about the past. I create ↵the future." That is a verbatim quote. David Brandon's reputation ↵is expanding faster than Domino's pizza in the oven. ↵

↵

↵Depending on what side of the cultural divide you find yourself, ↵this will either result in someone forcing Gizmo to chug a beer after ↵eight PM and result in the city being overrun by sweatervest-wearing ↵Gremlins or it will be a totally awesome event that has no negative ↵consequences whatsoever. That latter is probably closer to the truth, ↵but once you start playing night games can smoke machines and ↵"Enter Sandman" be far behind? I mean, keep on with your bad ↵self, Virginia Tech, but that's your thing. ↵

↵

↵Michigan's thing is stodgy adherence to tradition, and I wonder if ↵this will energize the fanbase or just send it further into very ↵annoying warring camps. As with everything else related to Rich ↵Rodriguez and the next year or two, that will depend entirely on how ↵many wins he can rack up and exactly nothing else. ↵

↵

↵*(Just kidding. They're not talking to each other because Michigan ↵ran out of gas and electricity six months ago.) ↵
