The fifth pick is in and SB Nation's Chiefs community, Arrowhead Pride, has selected...
Alabama LB Rolando McClain
McClain has a couple of things going for him that make Kansas City a reasonable destination. First, McClain comes from a familiar defense. Pioli and Nick Saban have worked together, and Pioli usually doesn't stray far from what he knows. Second, McClain is the quarterback of the defense, so to speak, and the Chiefs place a premium on cerebral players who understand not just their position, but the entire defense. Third, McClain has experience in a similar type of defense the Chiefs are trying to run.
McClain would not only make an immediate impact, but he'll give the defense a tougher mentality. Rey Maualuga didn't have the best statistical season for the Bengals, but he gave their defense a nastier demeanor. McClain can do the same - and he's a far better player.
The Chiefs can go a lot of different ways here. Their weakest positions on defense were inside linebacker, safety and nose tackle. Filling any of those needs would work here.

McClain would be a good fit but I also think that DB Eric Berry from Tennessee could work for the Chiefs.

This was a bad pick and it will never happen
Think about it. Scott Pioli is gonna pay an ILB 10-12 mil a year that has CD and character issues. No way.

I bet you also thought there was no way Scott Pioli would draft a 3-4 DE with the #3 pick.

Meh
I don’t think we SHOULD make this pick, but I still think there’s a good chance we’ll do it. Fits the Pioli mold. I look for McLain or Bulaga to be the pick.
Snap the f*cking ball, Brodie.

CHIEFS
I like a lot of what you fellas are saying but, I truly believe that for our first pick, we gotta go with Okung or Bulaga. Yeh, I kno everyone loves Eric Berry, and McClain and so do I, BUT, you gotta get a great left tackle first. Cassel DEFINITELY needs help on that back side! Think of how many times he ran for his life, took hits, and sacks from the lack of protection from the back side. And,What difference will it make to get the best defensive players if the offense is always 3 and out, because we dont have a solid left tackle. Any defense will get tired if they are on the field as much as the Chiefs D, last season. Just think of the difference Jake Long made for Miami in 1 season. I agree with the defense, BUT, u gotta be able to move the ball and give the D a blow. Even the greatest defenses get tired.

With as many ways to go
as the Chiefs have based on needs, this pick is hard to see clearly. Pioli will have plans laid for every contingency, but it would be sweet to know just exactly what position he thinks is the right one to take. Hats off to Joel and Chris for taking who they thought was BPA. The mystery will be solved on Thursday.
