The 13th pick is in and SB Nation's 49ers community, Niners Nation, has selected...
Oklahoma OT Trent Williams
OT Trent Williams is a guy who brings up some fairly divergent opinions among 49ers fans. Some love him, some hate him, and some are mildly indifferent. Nonetheless, he is a big bodied offensive tackle that would get a shot to compete for the starting right tackle position from day 1. Among mock drafts, the most common selection for the 49ers has been Trent Williams at #13. Whether it's an inspiring pick is one thing, but it certainly has the potential to fill a need.
I love this pick. If you need reason to love it as well, watch any Oklahoma games from 2008. When Williams played right tackle, there was arguably no better offensive lineman in the country. Right tackle might not be a sexy pick, but for a team on the verge, it's a great one.
Once again I agree with MTD on this one. Hard to knock building an offensive line.
The 49ers aren't sure of their quarterback future so there's no better way to find out if Alex Smith is the guy than by giving him maximum protection and letting it fly. Offensive linemen in the first round are usually some of the safest picks and Williams should go well with Joe Staley.
The 49ers now have bookend tackles, which is one of the most important parts of a team.
