Fear The Sword: Cavs Beat The Nets, As Expected

When the best team in the league faces the worst team in the league, it’s not hard to predict the outcome. However, that so-called “worst team” sent a wake-up call to any future opponents when the New Jersey Nets took down the Boston Celtics on their own court.

Fear The Sword noticed that the Cleveland Cavaliers heard that wake-up call and refused to allow any upset to happen on their watch.

Four minutes into the game, Cleveland led 10-9 when they decided to turn on the jets. Using their trademark defense to force turnovers and a new style of run-and-gun on offense, they rattled off a 25-6 run that ended the first quarter with a dominating lead of 35-15. The Cavs run was well-rounded, with five different players putting in at least two field goals each.

For the remainder of the game, the teams basically traded mini-runs. New Jersey never drew closer than 11 points, and the Cavs never extended it beyond 22 points.

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - LeBron James totaled 26 points and 14 assists to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers over the New Jersey Nets, 111-92, at the IZOD Center.

J.J. Hickson added 20 points and 13 rebounds while Mo Williams put up 16 points and six assists for the Cavaliers, who have won five straight games. Antawn Jamison chipped in 19 points and nine boards.

Brook Lopez had 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Terrence Williams scored a career-best 21 for New Jersey (6-54), which has dropped six of seven and is trying desperately to avoid finishing with the worst record in NBA history, set by the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers (9-73). This was the Nets' eighth straight loss to the Cavaliers, including four this season.

Cleveland shot 61.5 percent in the first quarter to lead the Nets 35-15. New Jersey went just 5-of-21 and turned the ball over six times, leading to seven points for the Cavs.

A pair of free throws from Lopez had the Nets within 10-9 with 7:51 left in the opening quarter, but the Cavs finished the period on a dominating 25-6 spurt. It featured several baskets from in close, including an alley-oop jam from Jamario Moon off a feed from James.

The Cavaliers held a sizeable lead throughout the second quarter and went into halftime with a 59-42 cushion. James had 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting at the break.

Cleveland's lead never dipped below 12 in the third, and James' driving layup boosted the margin to 83-61 with under three minutes left. It was 86-68 moving to the fourth, and the closest New Jersey got was 94-83 on a three-pointer from Williams with 6:36 remaining. The Cavs went on an ensuing 14-3 spurt.
