No. 8 New Mexico Holds Off TCU For 73-66 Win

Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Darington Hobson poured in 20 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and had seven assists, leading No. 8 New Mexico to a 73-66 win over TCU, on a night the Lobos claimed the outright Mountain West Conference title.

Senior Roman Martinez scored 19 in his final home game and Dairese Gary 16 for the Lobos (28-3, 14-2 MWC), who won their 14th straight contest to end the regular season. The 28 victories also tied a school-record as the team went 28-5 during the 1995-96 campaign. This was also New Mexico's first outright league title in 16 years.

Ronnie Moss had 14 points, while Zvonko Buljan ended with 12 and 11 boards for TCU (13-17, 5-10), which has lost three of four contests heading into Saturday's regular season finale, a home game against BYU. Edvinas Ruzgas scored 12 and Keion Mitchem 11 in defeat.

TCU trailed by 11 with 5 1/2 minutes left, but a three-pointer from Mitchem had the Horned Frogs within 67-64 with a minute remaining. Martinez then scored in the lane.

Greg Hill missed a three-pointer for the Horned Frogs, and Gary was able to hit 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch.

A three-pointer by Moss extended TCU's lead to 29-23 with 4:18 left in the opening half, but New Mexico scored the final eight points of the half, capped by a layup from Hobson.

A three-ball from Mitchem opened a 44-40 edge for the Horned Frogs, but the Lobos scored the next 11 to go in front for good. Phillip McDonald capped the burst with a three-pointer.

The Lobos will be the top seed in the MWC tourney, which starts next week in Las Vegas...UNM shared last year's regular season championship with BYU and Utah...The Lobos went just 13-of-26 from the foul line.
