Jason Elam Signs One-Day Contract With Broncos, Will Announce Retirement

Stay connected with SB Nation

Way back in 1993, the Broncos spent a third round pick on a kicker out of the University of Hawaii. Even then, that was considered a bit of a reach for a special teams player.

Seventeen years later and I think we can unanimously say it was worth it.

Jason Elam, 40, spent 15 of his 17 years in the NFL with the Broncos and will be around for at least one more day, according to the Broncos Twitter feed.

"Jason Elam will sign a one-day contract with the Broncos on Wednesday to officially retire as a Bronco..."

The final numbers for Elam...

  • Three-time Pro Bowler
  • Two-time Super Bowl winner
  • Longest field goal in NFL history (Tied - 63 yards)
  • Most points scored by one player for one team in NFL history

In March of 2008, Elam signed a four-year deal with the Falcons but said at the time that he would retire as a Bronco.

He will officially announce his retirement at 2:00 PM (MDT) on Wednesday.

Check back soon for reaction from SB Nation's Broncos community, Mile High Report.
