Brad Keselowski: Edwards 'About Killed Me,' Should Be Suspended

Brad Keselowski emerged from a horrifying crash on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway and called for NASCAR to suspend the driver who intentionally caused the wreck.

Keselowski, appearing mostly calm but somewhat shaken outside the infield care center following his crash, said Carl Edwards “decided to just wreck me intentionally down the straightaway and about killed me and a couple thousand people in the grandstands.”

“It’s one thing to race somebody hard and get in an accident when you’re going for position,” Keselowski said. “It’s another to just intentionally wreck someone at 195 mph at a track like this.”

Keselowski emphatically said Edwards should be suspended for “at least one race.”

“We wreck race cars – that’s going to happen, and they happen out of the pursuit of competition and the aggression to go out and win,” Keselowski said. "But they should not happen out of anger at tracks like this at this speed.

“The bottom line is, Carl is an awesome guy – one of the best in the garage. But he made a move that was uncalled for and cannot be tolerated in this sport, or we’re going to kill somebody."

Keselowski reiterated his belief that aside from just driver safety, wrecks like that can pose a threat to fans. A woman was injured last year at Talladega when Keselowski held his line and put Edwards' car airborne in a similar wreck – though that was not intentional.

"It’s not me that I’m worried about, it’s people in the grandstands," said Keselowski, whose car was mangled and crushed near the driver's side roof when he landed. "While I was up in the air, I thought for sure I was going to kill someone.”

Edwards acknowledged on the race broadcast that he spun Keselowski intentionally – retaliation for an earlier incident in which the blame could have gone either way. But Edwards said he did not mean to send Keselowski’s car airborne.

“Brad knows the deal between him and I,” Edwards said. "The scary part was his car went airborne, which was not at all what I expected.

“…I have a lot of respect for people’s safety. I wish it wouldn’t have gone like it did, but I’m glad he’s OK.”

At the time of the crash, Keselowski had been running sixth – a stellar and unexpected run in his first full Sprint Cup season. Edwards was more than 150 laps down as a result of the first incident, in 39th.

Edwards was parked for the remainder of the race following the wreck and called to the NASCAR hauler to speak with officials after the finish.

Upon emerging, he declined to speak with a number of reporters gathered to hear his side, saying, “I just have no comment on anything. I think that’s best.”

NASCAR President Mike Helton referred reporters to Robin Pemberton, the sanctioning body’s vice president of competition, who said any further penalties would be discussed on Tuesday – as is typical NASCAR procedure.

“We parked the 99 [Edwards], we reacted to what happened on the race track and we’ll go back and discuss it further early in the week,” he said.

Would the severity of the crash be a factor in NASCAR’s decision of whether to suspend Edwards for a race?

“You know, you look at all things, but I just think you have to look at how it started,” Pemberton said.

Other drivers said they hadn’t seen the incident, but it wasn’t entirely a surprise given Keselowski’s reputation for roughing up his competitors with aggressive driving.

“I said that last year because he wrecked a lot of people, I’m sure a lot of people wanted to pay him back,” third-place finisher Juan Pablo Montoya said. “Looking at the TV, somebody did.”

Red Bull Racing driver Brian Vickers said it would be unfair for him to comment on who was at fault because he hadn't seen the incident, but said retaliation can sometimes be effective.

“I don’t know what the 12 [Keselowski] did to the 99, and I don’t know what the 99 did to the 12,” Vickers said. “But I’ll bet you the 12 will think about it before he does it again.”

Ryan Newman, who has been outspoken about NASCAR’s need to prevent cars from getting airborne, said he hoped the upcoming change to a spoiler would help the problem.

“I hope NASCAR’s got that sorted out,” he said. “I said after Talladega, it’s going to happen at an intermediate track, but that window of opportunity is only at the end of the straightaway. … I guess I proved myself right.”

You need to look at the film of the first incident between Carl and Brad. Carl came down on Brad. The bozos in the booth began claiming Brad hit Carl. Well, he did, because you can’t stop on a dime at those speeds. Carl had a lane but couldn’t stay in it and tried to get into Brad’s. Then he goes out, literally waits on Brad like a hunter stalks prey to take him out. So in effect he wrecked Brad for a wreck Carl caused. Carl has taken out most of the drivers in the field at one time or another. I remember one time when Mark Martin called Carl "just one of those ‘truck’ drivers when explaining who wrecked him. You think Brad doesn’t have friends? Carl is the one who doesn’t have friends.

Some things can't be tolerated.

Great article. The premeditation of Edwards’ actions are most objectionable. This wasn’t a racing incident, it wasn’t “heat of the moment.” He had been off track for over an hour and was many laps down. When Edwards returned to the track he tried three times to run into Keselowski, and on the third attempt, he connected. In most places, that would be criminal conduct. Carl’s lucky he didn’t hurt anyone.

Robin Pemberton’s comments on the Speed Report make me think that NASCAR will just slap Edwards on the wrist. What he deserves, though is loss of points and purse for AMS, suspension for Bristol Cup race, and probation for the rest of the season. A mental health evaluation might also be in order.

NASCAR got what it wanted...

They said to have at it, and that is exactly what Carl did.
Will NASCR go back and take their “have at it” attitude back?

Brad deserves the Oscar - hands down! He gave the perfomance of his life.

Seems like we saw this at Homestead – THREE TIMES! I don’t remember anyone calling for Stewart, Montoya, or Hamlin’s heads. I want to be clear, I hated seeing the car upside down, and NO ONE wants to see ANYONE get hurt. That being said – I personally didn’t mind seeing Keselowski lose a top 6 spot at Carl’s hands (and I don’t like Carl, never have).

by kwms on Mar 7, 2010 7:26 PM EST reply actions

Keselowski can dish it out but can't take it.

No one says anything for Keselowski and all his aggressive driving. He got what he deserved. Did Carl mean to get him airborne? I highly doubt it.
I like how everyone on here is hating Carl as well. That’s real mature, to have a one sided view of the situation. Keselowski has been involved in more wrecks that Halle Berry and Lindsay Lohan combined.
Should Carl be suspended? No. Should he be docked any points? No. Not unless Keselowski is done the same way for his actions as well.

Elizabeth, You obviuosly spend more time watching Hallie and Lindsay.
Carl knew exactly what was going to happen as he continued pushing underneath BK , to lift the rear of his car. And int the interview he started smiling when he spoke of BK getting airborn.
You should ccheck to see how many wrecks cousin carl has been in, I think it dwarfs Bk’s by a long shot.
Why did he deserve it? you forgot to elaborate. Was it because Carl took himself out of it with a bone head move( turning down into BK)?
Go back to knitting you probably know more about that than racing.

This was definately uncalled for. I’m not saying that Brad doesn’t deserve some of the stuff he gets, but what did Carl expect the car to do when he got into the back of him and turned him at Atlanta, with the speeds they carry? A blatant wreck. He didn’t even try to mask it as ‘one of them racin’ deals’. He slowed up on the backstretch to get near the 12 car and then he tried to turn him once and couldn’t get it done and then did it again.

Carl couldn’t have waited 2 weeks for Bristol or 3 weeks for Martinsville? The tracks were most people collect on their paybacks. Tracks were the speeds are no where near what is pulled at Atlanta.

What did Brad do? He held his line and didn’t let Carl down in front of him. Big deal. Give and take or not; it’s a race! Brad didn’t have to let Carl down in front of him, if Carl deserved that position he would have passed him instead of expecting Brad to ‘woah up’ and give him the position. It’s called racing.

Would it be that big of a deal if Brad hadn’t flipped? Nope. But he did and that makes it a big deal. That ‘awww shucks’ grin of Carl’s probably won’t get him out of hot water this time.

by jr88freak on Mar 7, 2010 7:49 PM EST reply actions

he couldn’t mask it as a “racin deal” he was not RACIN he was riding around 100+ laps down. we can all understand “racin for the win” getting rough. racing is intrinsicly dangerous. this was calculated. maybe came out worse than Carl intended but he wasn’t born yesterday..he knows (by personal experience even) what can happen at those speeds. he put anothers’ life in peril. we are talking life and death here. it’s not a video game.

my 2 cents

Edwards should be suspended for 1 race and put on probation until Dec. 31. Keselowski should not be punished.

Look at the Talladega race Brad, what did you almost do to Carl and people in the grandstands? Brad wants to wreck everyone everyweek he’s gonna get pay back.

If my eyes saw each of these incidents correctly BK was holding his line. In Talladega Brad was holding his line. That wreck was not his fault. BK had no where to go. Check your facts!

Yes Karen, look at Talledega where Carl turned down to block Brad and wrecked himself. All racers backed BK and Carl admitted he turned down to block but was late. gosh don’t you keep up with these things ?
I haven’t heard Brad say he wants to wreck everybody every week. If you have please give date and time of that revelation.
Carlneed a 2 race suspension and to give his atl race earto penske.

NASCAR opened a can of worms, now what?

When I heard that NASCAR head honchos decided to “turn them loose” and let the drivers be “self policing” I wondered to what extent ? and how will they “police” themselves? How will the drivers resolve their issues? Who’s going to enforce this “self policing”? Now here we are. Will this event set a precedent? Will NASCAR take Brad’s recommendations on Carl’s punishment? Will NASCAR make an example out of Carl? How do you say on one hand we’re going to encourage rivalries,paybacks,bumping/rubbing etc but only to an extent? Where is the line in the sand drawn? These decisions(from NASCAR officials) seem intentionally vague and ambiguous and perhaps a bit reckless? One other thing to ponder: If the roles were reversed and Brad “Crashlowski” had hit “Keeping it classy” Carl, would we have been as shocked, surprised, disappointed? I doubt it. But since I am a devoted Carl Edwards fan, I am quite disappointed in what seems to be this new dad’s first temper tantrum. I’m sure he will get a severely long time out! I think it’s time to re-write the new free for all, anything goes play book. Evidently these boys can’t play nice?!

Intent

“which is not at all what I expected” Does this not show forethought and intent?? He should be out at Bristol, docked 100 points and fined $100,000. Period.

by ga1pest on Mar 7, 2010 8:23 PM EST reply actions

Keselowski didn’t deserve it, and if NASCAR has a problem with this sort of behavior then they should back it up by their actions. I honestly don’t expect much to come of it, but we’ll see.

It’s interesting looking at what Edwards said to the media after the first wreck and then what happened later. Most of the time I can’t help liking the guy, but sometimes I swear he has a psychotic alter ego.

The Penske School of Acting

Well, it didn’t take long for all the Brad K. supporters to come running to his defence against big nasty Carl Edwards. Even the great Mike Joy said that it was not right. That shows that no one in the booth is watching the same race the fans are. K puts how many people into the wall and then calls it a ‘racin’ deal’, then when the hammer falls on him, he whines like a pup. He is a Dale Earnhardt wannabe and honestly, he couldn’t carry Big E’s heel heat shields. This crap wouldn’t have been tolerated 15 years ago. If peeling himself off the fence every race didn’t smarten him up, then one of the veteran drivers would teach him a little respect back in the garage area. Remember Kurt Busch and Jimmy Spencer, y’all? NASCAR has got the drivers so worried about being suspended that they put up with this crap, and the fans have had enough. Then they say that they are going to let the drivers police themselves, and this is the first big test. (Let’s see how NASCAR does, pass or fail?) K isn’t bright enough to let off the gas and let Edwards in and puts 2 cars out of contention early in the race. Then when Edwards turns him, the COT does it’s backwards flip, the one NASCAR said it had remedied, and K is in a bad wreck instead of a spin. Tough break, he wasn’t hurt, no fans hurt and message delivered. Then FOX gives him a mike so he can explain that his 12 incidents were ‘racin’ deals’ and that Edwards just about killed him, when Edwards has to be diplomatic and not say anything controversial because he’s going to the truck. Put on your big boy pants and suck it up, K fans. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

If Nascar lets this reckless, deranged driver(Carl EDWARDS) offf the hook. Edwards better watch out. As Brad will have no problem putting him into the fence, intentionally this time. Carl is out of line and anyone with an sense would not argue otherwise.
Are Nascar drivers supposed to lift for certain cars or are they supposed to race to win? Does carl lift for other drivers trying to pass him?
Get another bottle and go to bed with your cat.

Brad did not cause the crash at Talladega, Carl did. .

Carl caused the earlier crash today In the earlier crash, Carl is the one who tried to put his car into the same spot where Brad was already moving. He pulled down on Brad at Talladega, causing that crash. Carl punted Dale, Jr. and turned the 88 Nationwide Car upside down at Fontana and blamed the crash on Dale, Jr. Carl is the precipitating factor in every crash in which he is involved. He needs to be fined, parked and placed on probation, but NASCAR will giggle about this and maybe, just maybe, put him on probation. They will be happy because the controversy got us talking about it. Dolts!

if you look that today’s incident by its self sure its no problem and if your Carl your going to with out a doubt give Brad the benefit of the doubt. but Carl has been wrecked by brad at least 2 times in the last year, and Brad has also wrecked MANY other people the same exact way he wrecked Carl today. so If I’m Carl I’m not going to look at today’s incident as a one off deal or even a racing deal. There is give and take at the cup level, especially 41 laps in to the race. that early you have to give, give, give. Brads MO is take, take, take! and just like the boy who cried wolf, drivers are only going to listen for so long. so when the time comes that there is a wolf, or in this case an honest to god “accident” or “racing deal” Brad has already shot him self in the foot. so IMO Brad had this coming…it just should not have been today. had Brads car not took flight Carl would be being praised just like Denny last year for the same thing….

once in the spring Bristol race last year but Carl saved it and At Memphis last last fall he turned left in the middle of the back stretch and took out Carl which also took out 5 or 6 other cars out before it was all over…not to mention that was the 4th or 5th wreck Brad caused in that one race alone.

by Jeremy Sparks on Mar 15, 2010 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, Edwards Should be Suspended!!!!

I would like to know how Carl would feel if this ended in a fatality? I like watching both of them race, but there are some things you just know you shouldn’t do. Everyone says some crap like Brad should have respect for Carl but you don’t get respect if you are not pushing for the win. If Carl wants to wreck Brad, By all means, Go for it, But do it in a light bump of getting him loose, You can clearly see the lap before, Carl went to hit him on the front stretch and missed and almost took himself out and then the next lap at the same spot you can see his white gloves make a turn to the right and did the dumbest fu*king thing ever. He should have just gave him a nudge or got on his rear bumper and got him loose, Instead he performs the P.I.T. maneuver and drives though hid door instead of a light bump and causes this to happen, Carl should be suspended one race, fined $2,000,000, fined 300 driver and 200 owner points and on probation for the rest of the year! I would like to know how Carl would feel if this ended in a fatality? seriously people, Grow up, If I cut you off on the highway, are you going to catch up and spin my car , get me airborne and possibly take out other people and even run the risk of killing them? If so, You are so stupid that your mother should have swallowed you.

I wonder....

What would people be saying if someone had been injured or killed (that includes fans in the seats)?

by Diana Jones on Mar 8, 2010 2:49 AM EST reply actions

Nobody is innocent...

##Carl vs Brad
1. Talledega ’09 – last lap, Brad and Carl touch sending Carl flipping into the catch fence. Can argue about the yellow line rule there.
2. Daytona 2010 Nationwide race – Carl tags Brad sending him in Dale Jr who then flips. Not sure if chain reaction caused Carl to hit Brad
3. Atlanta 2010 – Brad and Carl touch sending Carl spinning. 100 laps later, Carl comes back out, hits Brad and Brad flips.

##Brad vs Denny
1. Watkins Glen -08
2. Dover -09
3. California ’09
4. Phoenix 09
5. Homestead – Denny “final pay back”

##Carl vs Others
1. Matt Kenseth – fake punching incident
2. Kevin Harvick – Choking incident
3. Entire Roush driver roster states they don’t like Carl
4. Kyle Busch – Bump and run at Bristol ’08

So the question is: How do you police a “have at boys” philosophy? How far is too far? I guess we will find out on Tuesday.

Corrine, Good point but it was Carl that caused the wreck at Talledega. Carl admitted this on Tape. What is it about wanna be race analyst women these days.
What did happen at Talledega was Carl tried to block and got there late causing the wreck. Stupid move then and 2 stupid move on sunday at atlanta.
Just like Stering Marlin with 300 yards to go punts Dale SR. into the wal and kills him.
Is that what we want? another death at the track? Time to sit Carl and let him ponder his thoughts on racing. A mental health evaluation would seem logical after his statement and grinning about it all.
Carl is in serious need of an evaluation and drug test.
