Your Turn: Did NASCAR Make The Right Call?

Fans continue to debate – some passionately – about the Carl Edwards/Brad Keselowski wreck. Now that NASCAR has ruled, it's your turn.

NASCAR parked Edwards for the remainder of the Atlanta race and said Tuesday it was putting him on a three-race probation for Sprint Cup.

Was it enough?

Poll
Did NASCAR make the right call by giving Carl Edwards a three-race probation but not issuing a suspension, fine or points penalty?
Yes. A three-race probation is the right call.

AGREED! If anyone should know about flying through the air it should be Carl after Talladega.

Just a little light...

I’m OK with no suspension but question the 3 race “probation” I take that as them meaning “Carl, you better not mess with Brad during the 3 short track races coming up”. And if the two do get together the next 3 races, they’ll just extend the probation. So essentially, Carl got off scott free.

NASCAR clearly does not really care about safety

Brad did have something coming but to do it on the front stretch at 195 miles and hour is reckless and someone could have been killed. Clearly Carl Edwards is not the nice guy that he portrays himslef to be I have lost all the respect I had for him

Bad pick Peyton "Regular Season" Manning!!!

NASCAR

So much for NASCAR caring about safety.
If your going to turn someone over, just do it where there are no fans, hell, flip him out of the park for all we care.
I hope that more drivers play Opie and ‘aw shucks’ attitude, so that they only get a hand slapped.
NASCAR, you’ve set a precedent, be ready to pull more cars off the track in baskets from now on.

If we are going back to the old days..

Whatever happened to suspension until the end of the year what was up with that. So what I am getting at is if Joey Logano which has been Biffed enough times I guess he is justified to Biff the Biffle..cool Just hope NASCAR will apply the same kinda justice to everyone. We will see but it’s NASCAR and they are subject to changing the rules at a moment notice.

Three race cooling period and then we are back to business at usual ..OH those fab guys will be very busy. Mr Clean got of on a technicality I guess..so make sure guys that you get held in the pits as punishment for the final few laps that the ticket..lol

Can't let the car be used as a weapon

While I agree that the biggest issue is the car getting airborne, I also believe that NASCAR can’t allow drivers to use the car as a weapon. It is great that they are letting the drivers settle these issues on their own. They need to be settled between 2 drivers, not between 2 cars. Wait until the drivers get out of the cars and let them settle their problems on pit road, in the garage, or behind the hauler.

Probation

Probation is laughable in NASCAR. They might has well not have done anything. They only gave him probation so they can say they did something.

Well there ya go..

NASCAR set the precedence. I just hope it doesn’t turn WWE’ish. And the salivating of NASCAR over the coverage of this made me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

Too late Diana nascar has just surpassed WWE. Helton makes Vince look like God.

Ratings

Its sad it all comes down to ratings in this new world of media. I don’t much like the boxing matches in hockey, I hate the favortism and crookedness of the refs in basketball…so I guess we will see what comes of NASCAR. I want my fav sport to be on the ratings map because it’s good racing, door to door action, close finishes, independent driving styles. With the COT, I think that all went away. So to compensate, they went to the “boys have at it” theory. Shoot, they should just have cage matches after the race for the drivers that are mad at each other.

I will wait and watch and see what comes of it. But I am kind of an impatient person so NASCAR just might lose a 25 year devoted viewer.

You are very correct. It should be racing but having someone play suicidee bomber on other competitors is just to far out there.
These guys are going at sppeds that almost reach my top fuel speeds of the 70’s.
Thank goodnesss for safety measure or we would be attending Brads funeral. I hope Carl is proud of his place in history and his children will be ever influenced by this bone head.
Ultimately France, Helton and the rest of those idiots are responsible for allowing to go this far. Carl is just the stupid child who doesn"t get it.
May God watch over them all as they wreck each other and compound financial issues.

Probation

It was a reckless, stupid move but I don’t think NASCAR could have done anything more considering the role they’ve played in trying to get drivers to be more aggressive.

Nascar just got more expensive. The number of replacement part will help the parts business but not the pocket books of sponsors and team owners.
Folks instead of going to Bristol save your money and go to the local track and watch demolition derbies. Less expensive and you can actually see who is driving the cars.
Nope no die cast or fancy t-shirts just good ole bash em up and two em home.
Bristol , and future races, will be the most expensive demo derby in the world.

demo derbies

And demo derbies at the local race track are probably more entertaining!! LOL

Oh yeah. On the track and in the stands. Spectators are part of the show. For the price of one Nascar ticket 4 people can attend the local deby and have eats as well. Beverages are 2-4 dollars and not 6-10.

Question for Gluck

And anyone else who cares to comment. LOL But I really would like Jeff’s opinion here.

As I’m sure you know by now I don’t think the lack of penalty was the right thing, but it is what it is and we all have to live with it. Much like we do with the “Chase” LOL My main concern was the safety issue but I’ve also been around to see Harvick get penalized for comparatively ridiculous things over the years so that could be an influence too. But ANYWAY, here’s the question.

Helton mentioned that there was a “line” that could be crossed and when it was they would step in. He said they would see it when they see it. My question is, What do you think this line will be? This was pretty much the most spectacular crash we could have seen and it wasn’t a “racing deal” with Carl so many laps down. I’m just honestly wondering where the line will be between “have at it boys” and “enough is enough.”

Do you think it will be if it’s an on going thing between drivers? I mean after the 3 race probation I would assume all bets are off again, right? So I’d think the boys be boys would still be on. So do you think the line would be crossed after an injury or something? Or something else?

I’m honestly interested in what you guys in the media think on this one. This is definitely a new era, much like the Chase,so I guess it’s just going to take some getting used to on all parts. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Excellent question,
Can we get some lines from more drivers and see how they weigh in on this dangerous decision?

by Pastor88 on Mar 9, 2010 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Right call!

They wanted them to have at it and police themselves and Carl did that after Brad Kesolwski wrecked him AGAIN. Brad should think twice about his driving now and learn to respect the drivers

by karen s on Mar 9, 2010 5:45 PM EST reply actions

Don’t forget..Brad K. now has the same retaliation rights :)

It is akin to opening the prison doors and telling them have at it boys. We will decide what to do down the road . No laws no guidelines. Oh wait isnt that why the MAyfield deal is still ongoing. No hard and fast, pardon the pun, rules. How do drivers know whta limits to agressive driving are?Cowboy jusyic from suits!

Oh they will move on, and up into the stands. I bet everyone is looking for front row seats at Bristol. Are they going to reiforce the fence at Bristol?

I’ve been thinking about this all day while at work. I think NASCAR is right in not penalizing Carl with suspension, fines, or loss of points; but what is he really being penalized for – the car getting airborne? How is that his fault? We have seen it numerous times where a driver retaliates, but nothing is done – case in point…last year Denny Hamlin made it known what his intentions were going into the Nationwide race in Homestead and yet he did not receive probation, suspension, fines or loss of points when he spun BK not once but twice. Did it become an issue this time because Brad’s car got airborne? Then NASCAR needs to address the cars getting airborne, not the drivers.
