Philadelphia Phillies' GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. spoke with ESPN Deportes Monday and said that the Phillies are speaking with Pedro Martinez regarding a possible return to the Phillies at some point this season. Martinez signed with the Phillies in July of last year and joined the Major League club in August.
Martinez was hardly in his Cy Young Award-winning prime, but still pitched well going 5-1 with an ERA of 3.63 in his nine regular season starts before going 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in three postseason starts, both losses coming in the World Series at Yankee Stadium.
Martinez was looking for around $5 million this offseason, an amount the Phillies are unlikely to offer, but that was the number he asked for last year as well, prorated for when the Phillies signed him. Look for this story to evolve over the course of the Spring.
