With the 28th selection, the San Diego Chargers select Jason Pierre-Paul, OLB, South Florida!
The Chargers have greater needs, but passing up one of the top pass rushers in the draft doesn't seem like an option. A player with Pierre-Paul's talent can make a much bigger impact for the Chargers defense than anyone else currently available. I view this a precursor to a Shawne Merriman deal where the Chargers will allow Pierre-Paul and Larry English to split time trying to get after opposing QBs. If the Chargers actually had the option of drafting pass rushers like Brandon Graham and Pierre-Paul then it would also be an opportunity to field calls from a few teams willing to trade up.
With the 29th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the New York Jets select....
Jerry Hughes, OLB, TCU!
This pick was selected by the fans. Therefore, there is no write-up.
With the 30th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, The Minnesota Vikings select.... Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama!
With the 31st pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, The Indianapolis Colts select..... Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan
Shake'n'Bake says- "Graham is fantastic value. A strong enough player to hold down that LE spot for Mathis when rushing the passer isn't the main concern, Graham can fill the hole left by Raheem Brock (the D-lineman to see, by far, the most snaps for the Colts last year) being released.
Graham is also a very good pass rusher making him a excellent backup, spell player and successor to the Colts current ends. The Colts D is hugely reliant on pass rush from the defensive ends and the effects of injury on Mathis and Freeney were clear last year. A end of Graham's abilities behind Freeney and Mathis allows the Colts defense to hold up without one of the Pro Bowl ends.
Graham's college production was eye-popping with very nearly 1 sack and 2 tackles for a loss per game the last two years. He excelled against top competition in the Big Ten including a thorough undressing of top prospect Bryan Bulaga this past year (though Bulaga had played just two games at that point sandwiching a 3 week absence from the lineup due to the thyroid infection). Graham is a phenomenal meeting of value, instant impact and future potential.
Passing on Pouncey is tough when the Colts have an aging Saturday and only 1 year removed from AFL2 Kyle DeVan as their only interior linemen with more than a few games starting experience, but Graham is one of maybe only two ends (along with Derrick Morgan) who have the mix of strength and rushing ability to fill the Colts need for a run downs DE and backup rusher for Freeney and Mathis in a single pick. Pouncey fills one major need. Graham fills two significant ones."
With the 32nd pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, The World Champion New Orleans Saints select.... Brian Price DT, UCLA!
DrWhoDat says- "Brian Price is a 6-foot-1, 300-pound junior who was named Pac 10 Defensive Player of the Year. This pick fills a glaring need on the Saints who had to play one of their defensive ends at DT last year. Price has a quick first step and is usually the first defensive player off the snap. He also is an excellent run defender, pretty much everything the Saints are looking for in a defensive tackle."
