Finally, College Dunk Contest Produces A Good Dunk

These college dunk contests that involve only seniors are often a letdown. They get to the point where they often feel scripted and forced, because like in the NBA, they've kind of got a narrative they'd like to follow. Small school leaper takes on name you'll recognize from Name Brand University! The dunks are largely forgettable, but Vermont's Marqus Blakely finally pulled something off that I didn't recall seeing before.

I love this dunk for a number of reasons. First, as I said, I'd never seen it. Second, I think there's a high degree of difficulty. Not that the first guy would miss, but it's how he dunks it that requires a certain amount of timing with Blakely's leap so he can get up, catch it and get the ball back to the rim all in a motion that looks incredibly fluid.

Blakely is no stranger to the highlight reel dunk. A YouTube search of "Marqus Blakely Dunk" reveals a pretty strong highlight reel. My personal favorite is below:

Now someone has to explain to me why Blakely felt the need to do the John Wall Dance.

A Harlem Globetrotter should be given an entry into the NBA dunk contest every year as a sort of honorary Contributor To The Game category, sort of like how they gave Jethro Tull a Grammy.

Those And One whippersnappers will have to barnstorm for a decade more, but eventually I’d give them sort of the same ability to enter at will. It’d be like when Van Damme is allowed to enter the Kumite(?) martial arts tournament after dropping his sensei’s name.
