While blocking a ball in the dirt Monday evening, Jeff Mathis took a funny bounce and hurt himself. He was able to stay in the game, but it turns out the injury is a little more significant than was originally thought, and Mathis is now headed to the sidelines:
ANAHEIM —Catcher Jeff Mathis, in the midst of a 10-game hitting streak, has been placed on the 15-day DL with a fractured right wrist.
Mathis has a career OPS of just .608 and has always been better known for his defense, but through the first two weeks he's been one of the Angels' best hitters. Until he returns - which could take several weeks - the void will be filled by the slugging Mike Napoli, while reserve Bobby Wilson serves as the backup. Robb Quinlan has been called up from AAA to take Mathis' spot on the roster.
