Marquis Feels Pain In Rehab Appearance, Set To Miss 2-3 Months

Jason Marquis has been out of action since April 19th with bone chips in his elbow. On Tuesday, he made his first minor league rehab start with Class-A Potomac, and initial reports were good:

"We got him through the outing, no issues," Harris said. "He accomplished his 50 pitches and felt good afterward. That's the biggest thing we accomplished."

However, worse news has since come out:

Nats RHP Jason Marquis said he is not pain free and will most likely have surgery to remove bone chips and spurs out of his elbow

Nats
RHP Jason Marquis said he did not feel comfortable on the mound while pitching for Potomac. He will likely be out 8 to 10 weeks.

The contradictory reports are confusing, but the bigger issue is that, where the Nationals thought they might have a guy on the road to recovery, he's actually likely to go under the knife. As such, he's going to be out for 2-3 months, by which point one wonders if there will be an opening in the rotation.

Original Story

Jason Marquis Off To The DL With Elbow Trouble

The Nationals signed Jason Marquis to a two-year, $15m contract over the offseason, hoping the veteran starter would be able to offer some stability to the rotation. Marquis rewarded the team by allowing 20 runs in 8.1 innings over his first three starts. If there's good news, though, it's that he wasn't that bad pitching healthy; he actually has some trouble with his elbow, and he's headed to the disabled list.

Marquis placed on DL after MRI.

Jason Marqis had "floating bodies" in his elbow, Mike Rizzo said. Second opinion tomorrow.

Although pending said second opinion, the likelihood is that Marquis will be out for a while. No corresponding roster move has been announced, but 24 year old righty Luis Atilano is the favorite to come up from AAA, where he's allowed two runs in two starts.
