Mark Ellis Headed To The DL With A Trick Hamstring

Stay connected with SB Nation

The 9-6 and first place Oakland A's have been one of the surprises of the young season to date, but they'll have to deal with a little adversity, now, as Mark Ellis is headed to the disabled list after re-aggravating a strained hamstring on Tuesday night.

Athletics placed 2B Mark Ellis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Ellis had already missed a week after initially injuring himself on April 12th, but he came back Tuesday to start at second base. He couldn't last the game, though, and now he's off for an extended rest. Catcher Landon Powell has been called up from Sacramento to take Ellis' place on the roster.

Ellis is 10-31 on the young season, and he's steady in the field, but the good news for the A's is that they can slide Adam Rosales into second base without really missing a beat. Rosales is 8-28 with a home run so far, mostly covering for the incumbent. He's also demonstrated an ability to swing a good bat in AAA.

Of note is that Ellis has battled injuries throughout his entire career. Most recently, he struggled with shoulder problems in 2008, and calf problems in 2009.
