We've all heard the wacky stories about teams in the NBA, NFL and other leagues asking potential draftees strange questions. Maybe asking them about girlfriends -- and then girlfriends their real girlfriends don't know about. You know, stuff that's uncomfortable and a little strange. I believe a new bar was set by some NFL team in the line of questioning to former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant. Yahoo Sports has the story:
“They asked me if my mom’s a prostitute,” Bryant says, an account that was confirmed by [Bryant's advisor David] Wells, who attended the meeting. “No, my mom is not a prostitute. I got mad – really mad – but I didn’t show it. I got a lot of questions like that: Does she still do drugs? I sat and answered all of them.”Asking most guys if their mom is a prostitute is usually how a butt-kicking story begins, so in some regards I'm impressed by Bryant's restraint. Bryant also vented to Yahoo's Michael Silver about his general frustration with the draft process and how he has been consistently dogged -- and in his opinion -- mischaracterized. He won't be in New York, but he's definitely one of the most compelling personalities of tonight's first round.Bryant’s mother, Angela, had him when she was 15 and conceived his younger sister and brother within the next three years. She reportedly sold drugs, and she served a prison term during Dez’s childhood; at various times he lived with relatives and family friends. Dez and Angela are very close, and she will be with him at Wells’ house for a festive draft party Thursday evening.

you can’t draft a guy with that kind of background! I bet the steelers take him.

No matter what the truth is the question was out of place. Especially if you are a sports writer. Slowly but surely sports journalism and trash dumping seems to be coming together.

Drafting a guy in round 1 – the money comittment is so huge, it makes sense to want to know everything you can about the guy. Having said that, there are ways to find out if Moms a prostitute without asking her son. Hire a PI, give him a couple $50’s, and point him at her. Case closed, one way or the other. That way at least you don’t poison the relationship before you even draft the guy.

Unacceptable to ask any man about his mother.. Congratulations on the restraint because at that age I would have come across the table.
Hey Scurds
Didn’t the Rams draft Lawrence Phillips??? Open mouth, insert foot

Pretty drastic, but the team in question was testing his ability to control himself. I’m assuming that team called Oregon’s Blount the N-word as well?

yeah they did. i think it was back in 1612. i am surprised you can remember it. didnt philips win the heismann and break every ncaa record for a rb? it didn’t work out but boy did that guy look good on paper.

No big deal, they asked Tebow the same question.

Don’t forget Leonard Little who still gets paid by the Rams. What r u saying? U r defending the Phillips fiasco because of his accomplishments on the field, yet the cracks against Ben is what he does off the field. I don’t think there is one team in history that has never employed somebody at some point in time with character issues. By the way your 1612 comment is pretty ironic since you don’t shut up about Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Etc. You make a great politician! One like the DA in the Chapell Hill blunder prosecuting those kids from the Duke Lacross team. Selective enforcement, selective memory, and lets his bias affect his decisions (blogs).

i never said any of those things, they were all taken out of context. Prove it beyond the shadow of a doubt, now! what’s the matter, can’t do it? I win! just like ben bundy!

Man, asking crap like that bout your moms would prolly call for some serious restraint if not butt-kicking! Amazing what people will ask you these days!

"They asked me if my mom’s a prostitute," Bryant says, an account that was confirmed by [Bryant’s advisor David] Wells, who attended the meeting. "Then they axed me if she wanted to go to a party tonight."

The question is definitely in poor taste…but if it was me, i would still ask because you’re shelling out millions…any question about character is essential in trying to find out about a young kid who might have character flaws…

it is what it is.
If you’re that mad, fix the system so that rookies aren’t making more than the vets who proven their worth on the field. Until then, background questions like this one is just as good as any of the other wag(wild ass guess).

That kind of question was totally out of line. What if he had knocked the questioner on his butt…like a whole lot of people would have? Would they be saying that he had a "bad attitude?"
