Because they're the Raiders, you see. I'm at Radio City Music Hall, and when the P.A. announced "The Oakland Raiders pass at number 42," everybody got the joke. Of course they're the only team to let the draft clock run down to zero. It's the Raiders, stupid!
'Course, it didn't end there. Apparently, Oakland had engineered a trade with New England before the clock hit zero, but they'd failed to convey that message to the league. And that's how we had the Ravens running up to the draft table to get their pick in at no. 43, followed by an announcement that the Raiders had, in fact, traded their pick successfully, followed by everyone in Radio City looking around confused. Wait, so what pick is it then?
All told, the Raiders drafted Lamar Houston 44th overall. But with Al Davis in charge, it's never that simple...
