Shanoff's WUC: Broncos Steal Show With Tebow

Today's Calls: Tim Tebow vs. Josh McDaniels, Sam Bradford vs. Jimmy Clausen, Ndamukong Suh vs. Lions fans, NCAA 96 vs. NCAA 68, Kevin Durant vs. Kobe Bryant, LeBron James vs. Derrick Rose, David Stern vs. Phil Jackson, Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Tim Lincecum, Marquis Teague vs. John Calipari, Wrigley Field vs. College Football, Elin vs. Tiger and More. ↵

↵Tim TebowThe Opening Pitch: Tim Tebow was the big winner of the 2010 NFL draft. ↵

↵

↵— Yes, indeed, he went in the first round, after months of bearish projections from the draftnik-industrial complex. It was the ultimate in-your-face to uber-bear Mel Kiper Jr., who had to sit there gnawing on his own face. And the trade-jockeying to get him was exciting. ↵

↵

↵— The Broncos are a good spot: Coach Josh McDaniels is a QB guru from a Belichick school that Tebow already buys into. And it's not like Kyle Orton or Brady Quinn has the lock on the starting QB job beyond the next year or two. ↵

↵

↵— Tebow eclipsed the No. 1 overall pick of the draft, Sam Bradford, who was a foregone conclusion to the Rams for months — and was an afterthought nationally within two minutes of walking off the stage with Roger Goodell. ↵

↵

↵— "tim tebow broncos": As usual, Tebow became an instant Google search sensation (Twitter, too). You can also expect that his No. 15 Broncos jersey will be a Top 10 seller in the league next season. ↵

↵

↵Even with all the Tebow hype, he still exceeds expectations and confounds critics. Maybe the question isn't how he will handle the NFL ... but how the NFL will handle him? ↵

↵

↵The biggest loser? Jimmy Clausen, but more specifically his Boswell — Kiper, the draft guru who simultaneously dogged Tebow for months while ranking Clausen as fourth-best talent in the draft. Humiliating for both. ↵

↵

↵If you cared about more than Tebow, you were impressed by the Lions, who got a dominant DT in Ndamukong Suh and a game-breaker RB in Jahvid Best. It's a franchise that needed this kind of night — and got it. ↵

↵

↵Looking ahead to Round 2 and beyond: How far will Jimmy Clausen fall? The Vikings pick early in the second round and could take Clausen. Or maybe they will take Colt McCoy, also still on the board. They are the headliners. ↵

↵

↵NCAA Tournament expands to 68: Lame. (Some disagree.) Four play-ins from teams seeded 16th and 17th for the right to lose to the No.1-seed in each region is stupid. My vastly better idea: Have the play-in be for the 12-seed. ↵

↵

↵(And don't think the Tournament isn't going to expand to 96 eventually, as early as 2012. Each various faction of the NCAA is too nervous to own it, but it is an inevitability. Anti-expansionists can still plan to be disappointed.) ↵

↵

↵Big Ben Watch: Well, it looks like he is going to stay with the Steelers. He said (through his lawyer) that he wants to stay, and I think a solid 10 games to finish the season will get him back in good graces with the owners/fans. ↵

↵

↵NBA Playoffs: Kevin Durant wins the night in the NBA — and wins his first NBA playoff game, with 29 and 19 to lead the Thunder over the Lakers in OKC's first home playoff game. No matter how the series finishes, OKC can point to this one. ↵

↵

↵Bulls take one from Cavs: The first round won't be easy for Cleveland. The Bulls showed some fight at home, despite letting a big lead slip. Wow, Derrick Rose (31 pts) is spectacular. (And that's saying something, given that LeBron nearly had a triple-double.) ↵

↵

↵This weekend: Big road openers for the Mavs (tied 1-1 with SAS) and Nuggets (tied 1-1 with Utah). See full first-round playoff schedule here. ↵

↵

↵Stern takes on the griping: I know coaches (cough-Phil Jackson-cough) keep things entertaining with their incessant whining about the refs, but the commish is right to tell the coaches to shut up or shove off. Working the refs through the media is not clever (although it works); it's unsportsmanlike. ↵

↵

↵MLB Talking Points: Is Ubaldo Jimenez the best pitcher in the NL right now? Let's not quite take the title from Tim Lincecum (watch his start today), but Jimenez racked up another impressive win yesterday to run his record to 4-0 with a 0.95 ERA. (Yes, Lincecum is still better, but Jimenez is having a breakthrough-to-the-top-tier year.) ↵

↵

↵More: ↵

↵

↵— Maybe the Brewers want to save some. ↵

↵

↵— Every start — let alone win — from Jamie Moyer is a gem. ↵

↵

↵— Fantasy Stud: Ryan Braun (3/4, HR, 5 RBI, SB) ↵

↵

↵— Weekend Watch: Cards at Giants ↵

↵

↵CBB Recruiting: More for Kentucky. Marquis Teague, one of the nation's best PGs for 2011, committed to Calipari. Pair him with Mike Gilchrist, the No. 1 player in the class, and Cal has already locked up the best recruiting class in 2011. ↵

↵

↵Gimmicks: Wrigley Field football, featuring Northwestern giving up a home game to play Illinois. Calculated risk to forego any semblance of home-field advantage for the publicity of a game fans nationally will love to see. ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: "It's 100 percent happening." ↵
