You're sitting down for a job interview. Everything seems to be going pretty well. You're going over your references and past experiences, explaining why you'd be a good fit for the position. You even crack a witty remark or two. And then your interviewer hits you with this gem: Is your mom a prostitute? Is the interviewer:
A) One of your bros
B) An antisocial jerk right out of some dystopian, American Pyscho-esque dimension
C) Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland
If you answered B) and C), then you must be Cowboys draftee Dez Bryant. Indeed, according to Yahoo!'s Mike Silver, Bryant endured this playground taunt line of questioning from Ireland when the former Oklahoma State star sat down with the Dolphins brass during the pre-draft process. Seriously.
While Ireland undoubtedly thinks he was giving Bryant a shrewd psychological test right out of his boss Bill Parcell's playbook, Ireland was really only doing one thing: being an irredeemable douchebag. And in not taking the bait, Bryant demonstrated that you don't need a "good" upbringing to have class. Hopefully Ireland was taking notes.

You make a mighty big judgement...
…on very little evidence. One reporter whose “been told by a source close to Bryant.” Even if it was said, there was absolutely no other evidence of it being said, nor any claim of any other offensive activity. It’s this last part that’s really suspicious. If Ireland’s such a nightmare, why couldn’t the “source close to Bryant” give any other examples?
IF the question was asked, Silver and you assume it was part of some cruel, psychiatric game, without giving any other evidence. Again, the fact that nothing else about Ireland was mentioned argues against that. There is no report of the context, and you’re quite right about it being a provocative question. And I don’t blame Bryant for getting mad, but that "he “didn’t show it” also argues that the context of the question was less malevolent than Silver and you assert.
By the way, your claim that an “entry-level applicant who is considered to be one of the best prospects in the nation being interviewed for a highly paid, high-profile position at, say, an investment-banking firm” would not be asked that question is utterly obtuse. The background questions and investigation one goes through for even an entry-level job in an investment banking firm (or insurance company, brokerage, etc) is far more intrusive than imagine, apparently. I’ve had two colleagues who were stunned to find sealed, juvenile police records presented at their interviews, testimony from people they barely new, etc.

Okay, sure,
maybe Mr. Ireland is a terribly misunderstood man who only needs to be given a chance, but does it really bother you that much?

According to Dallas Morning News,
Ireland called the Cowboys, and asked to personally apologize for what he said. The fact that this question was aloud to be asked is completely unacceptable , and Ireland and/or the Dolphins should be reprimanded.

So, the NFL now has the ability to punish its members for hearsay?
Michael Silver is a columnist, not an investigative reporter, so I’ll take everything he says with a huge heaping of salt. Also, the fact that Ireland apologized for the inquiry does not establish a context for the dialogue between him and Dez Bryant, so I don’t see how the commissioner could reasonably punish him. This will warrant an internal investigation, and perhaps some new policies, but punishment at this stage is awfully premature.

"Is your mother a prostitute?"
What context would make that question acceptable?

How about the context that it was asked?
Irelnd asked what his dad did for a living while Dez was growing up.. then this was what was said after:
So ya.. context means EVERYTHING. And forthermore Bryants dad was a pimp.. he was in his 40’s wen he got Bryants mom pregnant, who was only 14. So do the math.
Henne is the QB of the Miami Dolphins.
Marshall, Hartline, Bess.. Now can we still go snag Bowe as well? Please? .

Wrong...
The background questions and investigation one goes through for even an entry-level job in
I worked as in-house counsel for a fortune 500 insurance/brokerage firm. Beyond the obvious fiduciary questions and investigation, I can assure you the question “was your mama a ho?”, never, ever came up. That’s because, in the real world, you get sued for that kind of stunt. This Ireland guy is just a cretin.
