The San Diego Padres are the early surprise of the season, with a decent offense and terrific run prevention carrying them to a 13-8 record. Shortstop Everth Cabrera hasn't been a huge part of their success, but the team still didn't want to lose him for any period of time, which makes this somewhat bad news:
Padres placed SS Everth Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain.
Cabrera hasn't played since the 26th, when his hamstring first started barking. Jerry Hairston has started at short in his absence, as his versatility was the reason the Padres brought him in over the winter in the first place. Hairston's yet to get into a groove, but he's a serviceable stopgap.
To fill Cabrera's place on the roster, the Padres called up Lance Zawadzki from AAA Portland. The 24 year old isn't a prospect, but will offer depth in the infield for as long as Cabrera's out.
