Rangers Place Jarrod Saltalamacchia On The DL With Back Stiffness

Rangers backstop Jarrod Saltalamacchia, embattled with health issues, now faces his latest - back stiffness. He has pain in the same area that cost him a week and a half of spring training, and now it's forced him out of regular season action as well.

Manager Ron Washington is none too pleased. Not because Saltalamacchia is hurt; rather, because Saltalamacchia got hurt on Monday and didn't tell anyone until after the game Wednesday.

"He needs to mature," Washington said. "He has put us in a bad situation. What if he had walked last night and we tied the game? Was he going to tell me then that he couldn't catch. I don't care how badly he wants to play, you can't just think about yourself. He was supposed to be healthy when we left spring training. That's what he told us. I'm not disappointed in him for being hurt; that happens. I'm disappointed in how he has handled it."

Saltalamacchia underwent an MRI Thursday morning and is set to see a back specialist Thursday afternoon. To fill his spot on the roster, the Rangers have brought up Matt Treanor. He'll serve as the backup while Taylor Teagarden gets the lion's share of playing time with Salty on the shelf.
