Some had predicted that former UFC poster-boy Roger Huerta would be ousted from the Bellator lightweight tournament in the first round by undefeated Chad Hinton. It was a thought that didn't seem all that based in reality, and from the opening bell it was clear that Huerta was out of Hinton's class. Chad certainly was game and showed a good heart but other than a few first round takedowns which he did nothing with he spent the fight getting pounded on.
The second round was an especially dominant one for Huerta as he spent time on top landing heavy blows for the entire round. In the third Roger was able to lock up a knee bar after a rolling escape and force the tap. With the win Roger, the heavy favorite in the lightweight division, moves on to the semi-finals.
In the other featured bout of the evening Joe Warren advanced to the next round of the featherweight tournament with a rather unimpressive showing against mid-west regional fighter Eric Marriott. In the first round Marriott was close to finishing the fight twice, once with a deep armbar and once with a locked-in triangle choke. Time expired shortly after the triangle was sunk and Warren had slammed his way out of the armbar. In the second round Warren continued to use his high level wrestling to get takedowns and safely worked ground and pound to control the round. The final round was controlled by Warren again via wrestling but once again he got his arm caught in an armbar and slammed his way out.
The final scorecards were all 30-27 for Warren. While it was clear that he won the fight, he was very close to getting finished on multiple occasions by quite possibly the least threatening fighter in the tournament. If a Wilson Reis or Patricio 'Pitbull' get one of those submissions locked in, they will finish it.
In other action Georgi Karakhanyan knocked out Bao Quach with a knee to advance to round 2 of the featherweight division and Carey Vanier moves on in the lightweight tournament with a TKO victory over Joe Duarte.
