Turkish midfielder Arda Turan converted a counter-attack, breakaway to put the visitors put 1-0 over the United States in the 27th minute at Lincoln Financial Field.
United States’ right back Jonathan Spector, seconds before, had carried the ball keep into Turkish third. Dispossessed at the edge of the box, Spector and the States were left scrambling when Turkey won the ball, put it into the space vacated by Spector, where Turan ran onto it.
The Turkish midfielder went in alone on goalkeeper Tim Howard, releasing the ball from 12 yards out, into the net just before Howard could meet him. Neither central defender Clarence Goodson nor Spector could get to Turn in time to prevent the opening goal.
The goal came after 27 minutes of relatively even play, though the best chance of the match fell to the Turks early, with Turan setting up Tuncay Sanil near the spot, only for the Stoke attacker to miss a goal where both posts were exposed.
