Leibovitz And The World Cup: Fan Of Football, Not Of Balding

Vanity Fair is blunt, but as I always say, whatever gets people watching soccer.

In the build-up to the World Cup, the culture magazine is giving its readership an in-depth view of this summer's potential stars.  But when you have talent like legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz at your disposal, why resort to using words:

Oh, Kaká.  So shy.

That image is the two-pager inside the cover of this:

No Messi?  No Rooney?  I suppose that's not what this is about.  I'm just not so sure about Landon's headgear.

↵

For those of us who follow such things, the Vanity Fair pictures create a quaint juxtaposition with how the U.S. Men's National Team is trying to sell shirts:

Don't you just love the unique way U.S. Soccer and Nike are marketing their shirts?  It's so original!  You see, they're using a beautiful woman, and assuming that she's all you, the potential consumer, needs.  Is it?

↵

Exhibits A and B:  Makes sense - ultimately promotes the sport in a unique, artistic way.

↵

Exhibit C:  Insultingly trite.  Promotion fail.  Certainly don't hate you because you're beautiful.  Do you even play soccer?
