Kelvim Escobar To Undergo Surgery And Miss Another Season

When you think "injury-prone pitchers," a few names come to mind. Mark Prior. Ben Sheets. Rich Harden. And, of course, Kelvim Escobar. All four were blessed with all the talent in the world, and all four were cursed with the inability to stay together. Now Prior's nowhere close, Sheets is struggling, Harden is struggling, and Escobar is set to undergo an operation that will wipe away his 2010 before it ever began.

Kelvim Escobar will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on Wednesday.

Escobar was signed to a $1.25m contract last December by the Mets, but the would-be setup man felt tightness in his shoulder as he prepared for spring training and, before long, he was having trouble gripping a baseball. Plans to return kept getting pushed back, and now this procedure will prevent Escobar's 2010 from ever taking place. It's only the latest incident for Escobar, who has thrown just 25.2 professional innings since the beginning of 2008. The righty has missed significant time in his career with problems in his shoulder and elbow.

It's worth noting that, two months ago, Escobar said he was ready to retire if need be.

“I’m a very proud man,” he said. “I’ve had a decent career. Whatever happens, I’ll be happy.”

Only time will tell if he'll try to give this one more go, but in the event that this is the end of Kelvim Escobar's career, he won't have any reason to feel bad about his impressive strikeout rate and 4.15 ERA.
