I think it's safe to say that one of the things that torpedoed the Mavericks' season was Rick Carlisle's insistence on not giving electrifying rookie Rodrigue Beaubois some minutes. In the long run, maybe that's the right idea. Maybe Beaubois learned a lot from the bench, who knows?
In the short term, though, it definitely hurt. Anyone who saw Game 6 of their series with San Antonio, when Beaubois pretty much singlehandily brought Dallas back from a huge deficit in the second quarter. On a team that had an older supporting cast, not playing your one explosive young player is foolish. It was a major blemish on Carlisle's performance this season.
Luckily for Carlisle, Jason Kidd knows what's up. If it's up to Kidd next year, Beaubois will be on the court next year like he should have been this year.
Here's what Kidd said on a conference call with reporters today (via SB Nation Dallas).
"I would hope that's what we're shooting for, to develop Roddy this summer and to play him more next season," Kidd said. "I wouldn't be opposed to coming off the bench some next season."
You know what? Maybe the Mavericks should just make Kidd a player coach. It would save money and would probably help the team.
Actually, scratch that: Mark Cuban doesn't know what cutting costs means.
