The Patriots had an offer on the table to Logan Mankins before he requested a trade on Monday, according to Albert Breer of the Boston Globe.
The total value of the deal, Breer reports, was $35 million over five years for an average of $7 million per year.
That's close -- but not equal -- to the $8.1 million standard Saints guard Jahri Evans set this offseason.
Both Mankins and Evans were restricted free agents and both have been to two Pro Bowls so it's reasonable for them to expect similar numbers.
So the Pats offered a number close to but not the same as Mankins perceived value on the open market. Sounds like this impasse could go on for a while.
Though it doesn't seem to matter now that he says he won't sign but the Patriots did indeed reduce Mankins tender to 110% of his 2009 salary, according to league rules.

Patriots at it again
This is New England’s M.O. in the Belichik era – get a couple of good years out of a guy then don’t pay him come contract time. Heck, they even seem to be dragging their feet a bit with Brady’s new deal.

Fans not happy
It seems the fans of New England are not on Mankin’s side at this point. The opinions are not over “money or contract” as much as they are his words directed at the organization. I’ve been on two chat websites and that is what seems to be infuriating fans accross the board. See for yourself…. Go to Patspulpit.com and read the comments
To call the Kraft family and the organization virtual “liars” was way out of bounds. As result, most comments are split between “trade him” and “let him sit all year for NOTHING”…. Neither of which I’d call endearing responses from fans.
