Boise State Expected To Receive Invitation To Join Mountain West Conference

The opening salvo in the Great Realignment Battle of 2010 could very well center on Boise State and the Mountain West Conference (MWC). While the Big Ten's efforts to add one, and possibly five, teams, in order to qualify for the cash cow that a conference title game would be have garnered the most attention, the MWC appears to be on the brink of making a preemptive move of its own to brace itself for a brave new college football world.

Much as our own Mountain West Connection predicted, the MWC is reportedly close to inviting Boise State to become the tenth member of the conference, per the Denver Post. Adding a perennial power in Boise State would not only steel the MWC against the possibility of losing some of its own stalwart programs should the PAC-10 try to poach them (Utah and BYU have both been mentioned as potential targets), as well as bolstering their argument that they deserve an automatic BCS bid. Indeed, a MWC that featured Boise State, TCU, Utah and BYU could very reasonably maintain that they boast a stronger football conference than the Big East, and perhaps even the ACC.

The MWC is expected to announce a decision as early as Monday, given that all paperwork needs to be signed by July 1 in order for any new school to qualify for the 2011 football season.

Wow

This is huge, the question is, will they really accept?

I don’t see why not, it would be much easier to get to a MNC game in the MWC then the WAC.

they should

Reasons I have heard why not is because they will no longer be on ESPN and it will be more difficult to get to a BCS games with more tougher games.

But, BCS money is too big and Boise (or any other MWC) does not have to be undefeated to get to a BCS game, and you are right a trip to the title game would be a little easier.

I agree and have to say

that they really didn’t get too much ESPN time anyway..I believe the only game televised on ESPN last year was the Oregon game.

The answer is Yes
This is huge, the question is, will they really accept?

Boise State AD Gene Bleymaier and BSU President Bob Kustra have been salivating over the possible invite to the MWC at least since TCU got the invite in 2004.

mwc is a nice conference but...

“a MWC that featured Boise State, TCU, Utah and BYU could very reasonably maintain that they boast a stronger football conference than the Big East, and perhaps even the ACC.”

lol.

yeah, Boise State, TCU, Utah and BYU = georgia tech, miami, florida state, clemson, unc and virginia tech.

please tell me this is a joke.

so wrong

The top MWC team has outperformed the ACC. And if the ACC is so good then why are they outside of the top 6 in two of the three BCS components where as the MWC is outside in only one and is doing well in top team ranked, and teams in top 25.

And...

Bill Hancock has stated that the only reason they will keep their BCS bid is because of their contract with the Orange Bowl even if they fail to meet on the field requirements to be considered a BCS league they will get an auto bid.

Does not sound like a strong league to me, nor should be boasting how good they are.

Disagree

In my opinion, one of the biggest reasons for distortions in determining strength of conference is the effect of middle of the road teams. Let’s say we have two hypothetical conferences, each with an elite team at the top of equal strength. Let’s say the rest of conference A consists of poor quality teams, while conference B has a number of decent programs. Under this scenario we would expect conference A’s elite team to finish with a much better record than conference B’s elite team. We would expect this because playing more than one tough game a season (especially in a row) means you have less time to prepare, more injuries, tired players, etc. Also, because no win is a certainty, the probability of winning a certain number of games decreases as the opponents are stronger. A worse record would also place conference A’s elite team at a much higher position in the polls at the end of the season (let’s face it, strength of schedule is barely taken into account for those things).

While my hypothetical doesn’t come close to mirroring the MWC and the ACC, it illustrates the point. The first BCS component (top team ranked) that you hold so dearly is a very bad measure of a conference in my opinion. It rewards conferences that have good teams at the top and poor teams at the bottom (even if it doesn’t always play out that way) because we would expect those conferences to end up with very highly ranked teams and very poorly ranked teams. Similarly, the third component (teams in top 25) is a poor measure of a conference and is very similar to the first component. It rewards conferences who have a few good teams (good enough to get into the top 25) and a bunch of poor teams. A conference like the ACC in which there are a number of teams with some level of quality will always have trouble in these two categories.

I would argue that the second component (average ranking of all teams) is a much better measure of a conference as it measures the strength of the conference as a whole (not just the top teams). More importantly, it doesn’t allow a few teams to boost a conference’s ranking by winning 2 tough games and then cruising through an easy schedule. You neglected to point out that the ACC is 2nd on that list, a higher position than the MNC achieved in the other two.

Yes I am a Seminole. Yes I am biased towards the ACC. Yes I give props to BSU, TCU, Utah, and BYU for putting together good teams. Yes Utah beat Alabama, but so did a poor FSU team the year before (through I have to point out that Alabama was a better team in 2008 than in 2007, also keep in mind that it was likely a better team in 2009 than in 2008). I would also like to point out that FSU beat BYU last year and will likely do the same again this year. Which conference is better? I don’t know, but I it depends on the criteria and pointing to some of the BCS components that are based on subjective polls is not a very good measurement. (Oh and don’t forget BC, who is often under-ranked.)

by MWM Nole on Jun 3, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes they are

But the other two components are important which the ACC is 7th in both. I agree overall strength is better, but it can also mean a lot of average teams. The ACC will not lose their BCS tie if they fail to qualify by the set standards since they have a contract with the Orange Bowl.

So, if the ACC gets in by not meeting the standards a very close MWC team should easily be able to petition to get in.

oh really?

an mwc blogger thinks the mwc is the best? lol, hard to believe.

u can believe whatever u want, but the rest of the world thinks the mwc is several slots below the acc.

by wesleywhatwhat on Jun 2, 2010 3:45 PM EDT reply actions

i mean...

u REALLY think Boise State, TCU, Utah and BYU compares to georgia tech, miami, florida state, clemson, unc and virginia tech?

i just wish i could put some money on that statement, but i doubt you’ll be easy to find at the end of the season.

by wesleywhatwhat on Jun 2, 2010 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

You left a few out.

If I was going to brag about a conference, it certainly would not be the ACC. If I remember right, this last season the ACC as a conference lost to not just 1 or 2, but 4 FCS teams. Now that’s some power right there.

i look forward to the vt/boise game

let them settle it on the field, even if boise is basically playing a one game schedule in 2010.

im not going anywhere

Not saying MWC is best but with the addition of Boise state it is on par with ACC.

Yes.

The numbers don’t lie. TCU and Boise State were two of the best teams in the country last year. Utah has been to two BCS bowl games and won them both. They are also the last team to beat “national champion” Alabama. BYU is a very consistent program that has finished in the top 25 four years in a row. It is also not just those four teams. Air Force is a very consistent program as well. The Mountain West also won the Bowl Challenge Cup last season, with its only defeat being TCU to Boise State, who will soon be in the league. Oh, and Boise State is not just playing a one game schedule. They also play Oregon State. It is not their fault that their current conference sucks ass. Why should they be punished because the rest of the WAC is not good? You cannot control your conference affiliation. You can only join a new conference by INVITATION.

Not only that

Hey Wyoming won a bowl game against Fresno State too with a first year coach so expect even bigger things this year.
