The United States is almost certainly into the knockout stage after a 91st minute counter attack was finished by Landon Donovan to put the U.S. up 1-0.
Moments after the Algerians had their best chance of the match, a header at Tim Howard’s right post, the United States broke out on the counter attack, with Landon Donovan feeding Jozy Altidore to the right of the break. Altidore’s shot was saved by Rais M’Bolhu, but the rebound was finished by Donovan for a 1-0 lead.
With the goal, the United States in on track to win Group C, with England having beating Slovenia 1-0.

Love it
I’m English born living in the US and I was watching the England game with US on PIP on the bottom corner. Right as England won the game the US scored and they had a simultaneous celebration. Pure ecstasy.
I’m upset that England didn’t win the group but I can’t find anything wrong with the results here.

Did England keep pressing after the goal?
How did they look? More lively? Less anxious?

Up until about 80 minutes yeah
They looked a lot better. Had some great opportunities. They just need to work on finishing and fast break defense. Rooney had some good chances and started to look like himself. I’d say they are doing much better.
Took a lot more risks than last time

It would have been nuts not to pack it in for the last 10 minutes
So what changed? Do you think the players were individually more positive? Was it replacing Heskey?
Their defense will probably continue to be something of an issue, given the health of their back line. I think they should realize that teams win matches all the time in which they concede goals. It’s harder to win (though not impossible in knock-outs) if you don’t score.

Replacing Heskey
Definitely made a big impact.
Defoe is just so much more offensively minded. He has the killer instinct to make goals that Heskey just lacks.
The team came in knowing that it couldn’t get any worse and just came in finally enjoying themselves. That made the differences. That and the early opportunities and the goal by Defoe gave them a lot more confidence which showed in their fierce offense later on.
Slovenia played some superb defense surviving a killer onslaught at one point where we got 3-4 shots in 1 go.
