Battle of the Bullpens

Battle of the Bullpens now....still 1-1 in the 11th. Matt Price is throwing smoke for the Gamecocks, striking out the side. Jeremy Erben remains in the game for Oklahoma. He's pretty durable for a reliever.
Christian Walker just singled to right field. Erben has to be tired; he's pitched a lot of innings lately.
Now a walk puts runners on first and second, with two outs....

And Erben works out of the jam. To the 12th inning.

Bottom of the eighth, nobody out, runner on second, Erben relieves Neal. He has a 90-93 MPH fastball and a good slider, but will need to be sharp here....Buechele just bobbled a bunt, everyone safe.

Taylor Shuts Down Sooners in the Eighth

The game continues to move quickly. In the top of the eighth, sidewinding South Carolina reliever John Taylor (3.76 ERA, 16/5 K/BB in 26 innings) shut down Oklahoma with ease. On to the bottom of the inning in this excellent display of college pitching.

Neal Dodges Seventh Inning Bullet

Neal dodges another jam, stranding a runner on second base to end the seventh inning. Jeremy Erben was warming up in the pen, and it will be interesting to see if the Sooners stick with Neal or bring in a fresh arm in the bottom of the eighth.

Roth Mows Down Sooners in the Seventh

Michael Roth shut down the Sooners in the seventh inning, using his 90-92 MPH fastball and slingshot southpaw delivery. Now to the bottom of the seventh. Expect Oklahoma to have a quick hook too if Neal gets in trouble with a tiny 1-0 lead.

Oklahoma still leads South Carolina, 1-0 in the Seventh

Zach Neal's command within the zone has wobbled a bit in the last two innings, but he continues to get people out and now has six shutout innings under his belt. Still Sooners 1, Gamecocks 0, top of the seventh.

Continue

Cooper Relieved by Michael Roth

With runners on first and second in the top of the sixth, South Carolina brought in reliever Michael Roth to replace Blake Cooper. A quick hook, completely understandable given that it is an elimination game. Roth has a 1.44 ERA with a 27/7 K/BB in 25 innings. He got Cody Reine to ground out to second base, ending the inning.

Neal Escapes Bases-Loaded Jam

Zach Neal looked a bit more human in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases on a walk, double, and hit batsman, but he coaxed an infield popup out of Evan Marzilli to end the inning. Sooners still lead the Gamecocks, 1-0, top of the sixth.

Halfway Mark: Oklahoma 1, South Carolina 0

The game is at the halfway point now, heading into the bottom of the fifth with a 1-0 Sooners lead. It's a definite pitcher's duel, both Blake Cooper and Zach Neal mixing pitches, working quickly, and throwing strikes. Occasional hard-hit balls aren't finding holes, and both pitchers are projecting great mound presence.

Zach Neal: Four Shutout Innings with Four Strikeouts

Neal continues to work quickly through the South Carolina lineup, fanning four in four innings so far. His slider looks particularly good tonight. Oklahoma still leads 1-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning.

Oklahoma Fails to Capitalize

Oklahoma had a runner on second in the top of the fourth, thanks to a single by Garrett Buechele and a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Ogle, but was unable to bring him in. Still 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. It will be interesting to see if the elevated fastball Neal threw at the bottom of the third is a trend possibly signaling a coming Gamecock rally, or if it was just a single bad pitch.

Top of the Fourth, Oklahoma Still Leads 1-0

South Carolina's Evan Marzilli hit a long drive to the right-center gap on an elevated fastball from Zach Neal, but the ball was caught to end the bottom of the third inning. Oklahoma still leads 1-0 as the pitching duel between Neal and Blake Cooper continues at a good pace.

Continue

Blake Cooper, 1-2-3 in the Third

Blake Cooper zipped through the Oklahoma lineup in the top of the third, matching Neal's second inning sharpness with some nasty breaking balls of his own. This one looks like a good pitching matchup so far, with a pair of polished moundsmen at the top of their game. Let's see how many innings it lasts.

Top of the Third, Oklahoma Still Leads 1-0

Sooner starter Zach Neal appears sharp tonight, working his fastball and slider effectively in the zone, especially in the second inning. He is pitching with a hairline ankle fracture, but with no ill effects.

Zach Neal

Oklahoma starter Zach Neal was a 17th round pick by the Florida Marlins in the recent draft. Like Cooper, his fastball velocity is fairly average by professional standards, but he has good secondary pitches and throws strikes. He enters the game 8-3, with a 4.65 ERA and an 88/29 K/BB in 99 innings.
