China missed the World Cup this year, and will have to decide which neighbor to root for from home. The decision is not a pretty one: either pull for Japan, a historical nemesis with some really nasty wartime baggage re: China, or root for North Korea, the crazy guy next door who sometimes fires his shotgun on his porch until someone brings him dinner.↵
North Korea it is, though not without a friendly stab in the endorsement.
“We will cheer for North Korea because they are our neighbors,” said Wang Qi, whose company is selling tickets for Chinese fans to travel to South Africa. “They can’t even feed themselves, but they work harder than Chinese athletes.”↵
Chinese love: it’s an honest form of love, if painful at times. The most entertaining moment of the Cup may be watching them run over the wall and into the arms of soccer scouts and agents the minute their final group stage game ends.
