Don't count out the Phoenix Suns just yet in the Amare Stoudemire sweepstakes. According to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic, the Suns met with Stoudemire yesterday and "made progress" on a contract extension.
Suns All-Star Amar'e Stoudemire, agent Happy Walters, Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver and Suns Coach Alvin Gentry had a long meeting and "made progress" on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, according to Walters.
Stoudemire participated in much of the meeting, as Walters and the Suns' brass met for more than three hours in regard to a contract extension.
Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski fills in more details:
Sources say the two sides are expected to resume talks on Wednesday, and Stoudemire is holding off opting out of the final $17.6 million season of his deal to make him a free agent. Free agency begins at midnight ET, and sources say it's still possible Stoudemire will opt out of his contract and continue negotiations with the Suns while also meeting with other teams.
The fact that Stoudemire has not yet opted out of the final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent is really telling here. Perhaps he is going back to Phoenix after all.
