The Tampa Bay Lightning have cleared a bit of cap space, sending Andrej Meszaros, a $4 million cap hit, to Philadelphia for a second round pick. Here's the reaction from our Flyers blog, Broad Street Hockey:
According to Bob McKenzie on Twitter, the Flyers have acquired Andrej Meszaros from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a second round pick. Meszaros, 24, is under contract until 2013-2014. He has a cap hit of $4 million a season, with the salary ramping up at the back end of the contract.
Meszaros is a big defenseman, but a big criticism of him is that he doesn't use his body as well as he can. We'll try to get more of a scouting report on him from the folks over at Raw Charge.
At first glance, this seems like an overpayment for a guy that's that expensive. I don't know much about this guy, though, so we'll have to see how this goes. It's a bit curious that the Flyers wouldn't at least wait to see what showed up on the free agent market, though.
For Tampa, it's clearly a cap space move. They free up that $4 million and they're in play for the rest of the day.
