Varitek Out 4-6 Weeks With Broken Foot, Sox Acquire Cash From Astros
It was bad enough when the Red Sox lost Victor Martinez to the disabled list. Now comes news that Jason Varitek will be joining him for six weeks to recover from a broken foot.
As to how the injury came to be...the Red Sox are still trying to figure that out. Varitek was hitting .263 and had seven home runs so far.
Earlier in the day, the Sox got some much-needed insurance at catcher when they traded IF Angel Sanchez to the Astros for Kevin Cash. Cash will be thrown right into it as he'll be behind the plate when the Red Sox open a three game series with the Baltimore Orioles Friday night. Tim Wakefield will be the pitcher and Cash was formerly his batterymate.
