Superliga 2010 Update: New England, Morelia Advance With Group A Set To Conclude On Wednesday

A pair of 1-0 results in Tuesday's Superliga action sent the New England Revolution into the next round on top of Group B, Morelia finishing second after the teams' match in Foxborough.

The result meant Pumas had to score five goals against Chicago (and beat the Fire by four) to advance, but with their loss at Toyota Park, UNAM finishes last in the group.

For New England, it was Marko Perovic (for the second consecutive match) capitalizing on an error in defense to score the match's only goal.  Morelia defender Adrián García's attempted clearance from inside his own area was meekly hit from the spot to the left of the area, where Perovic was able to run-unto a 12-yard shot that beat Yair Urbina far post.

It was the third consecutive 1-0 victory for New England, winning them Group B with nine points.

The one goal loss for Morelia meant Monarcas had virtually clinched second place, and with Wilman Conde's header in the first half converting a corner kick in Chicago's match against Pumas, the Fire had enough to climb out of last place and give Morelia their berth in the next round.

Tonight group play wraps-up, with Houston hosting Puebla and Pachuca visiting Chivas USA in Group A play.  Puebla sits atop the group with six points and needs only a draw to secure first place, while a win for Houston would put them atop Group B with seven points.

Should the Dynamo get a point, they would eliminate Chivas USA, who need a Dynamo loss and a win over Pachuca to pull even on points and give themselves a chance to advance on a tie-breaker.

Superliga 2010 Update: Group B Closes-Out Play On Tuesday

The final round of group play in the 2010 Superliga starts on Tuesday with Group B matches in New England and Chicago.

New England is already through to the next round, having defeated Chicago 1-0 this weekend at Toyota Park, moving to the top of the group with six points. The Revolution got a late goal from Marko Perovic - a strike from distance converting a turnover from defender Kwame Watson-Siriboe - to put New England out of Superliga, the Revolution sitting with zero points and no chance to finish in the top-half of Group B.

For Fire fans, the 77th minute goal was a bitter turn of play, with the home team looking the more likely to score throughout the match, the most glaring instance being a Mike Banner left-footed rocket that hit squarely off Matt Reis's right post in the 13th minute. Marco Pappa and Justin Mapp (amongst others) also had chances to put last year's finalists in front, but when an opportunistic Perovic beat Sean Johnson to the goalkeeper's left, Chicago lost their chance to redeem themselves for last year's shootout loss to Tigres.

Chicago closes out Superliga 2010 with Tuesday's second match, hosting Pumas, by which time the sides will know whether UNAM has a chance to advance. Coming off a 2-2 draw with Morelia on Saturday, Pumas now needs Monarcas to lose the night's first match to New England. If that happens, Pumas can advance to the competition's next round by defeating Chicago with a margin big enough to reverse a goal difference that starts Tuesday five goals to Morelia's advantage.

For New England, their match with Morelia will carry special significance as it will be Steve Ralston's last with the club.  On Monday it was announced that Ralston, who rejoined New England recently after a brief stint in USSF Division II, will retire after Tuesday's match.  Ralston has played in every Major League Soccer season dating back to his debut with the Tampa Bay Mutiny in 1996.  Since 2002, he has played for New England, becoming Major League Soccer's all-time leader in games and minutes played.  The midfielder is expected to play on Tuesday and make his retirement official at a post-match press conference.

Superliga 2010 Update: Houston, Puebla Take 2-1 Wins To Top Of Group A

HOUSTON - JULY 15: Joseph Ngwenya center of the Houston Dynamo receives high fives from Corey Ashe #26 after the Houston Dynamo defeated Pachuca CF 2-1 on two goals by Ngwenya at Robertson Stadium on July 15 2010 in Houston Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

Houston was able to overcome a shaky night from their defense to register a 2-1 victory over Pachuca, opening Group A play in Superliga 2010. A brace from Danny Ngwenya - his second goal dramatically headed home in the 85th minute - bested Damian Manso's 51st minute tally to put Houston at the top of the group after one round.

However, Houston coach Dominic Kinnear will have concerns about a defense that was exploited most of the night, allowing Pachuca striker Darío Cvitanich four strong chances on goal.  With none of the chances converted, Dynamo fans were left with their own claim to superiority: A second half, Brian Ching goal that was waved-off after a phantom offside call.

Houston is joined at the top of Group A by Puebla, the Camoteros also recording a 2-1 win, getting goals from Nicolás Olivera and Álvaro González.  Puebla's attacking tandem converted goals from counters in the sixth and 62nd minutes, giving the visitors a comfortable lead. Costa Rican Michael Umaña scored a consolation goal late for Chivas USA, who join Pachuca at the bottom of Group A.

Superliga takes Friday off before Group B resumes play on Saturday. Chicago will host New England before Morelia, topping the group, takes on Pumas.  Both matches will be played at Toyota Park in Bridgeview ahead of Sunday's action in Group A.

Superliga 2010 Update: Revolution Revolt, Fire Flame Out Heading Into Group A's Debut

Superliga 2010 got off to an embarrassing start for the Chicago Fire, with last year's finalists losing 5-1 to Morelia at Toyota Park.  The hosts yielded a goal within four minutes to Elias Hernández, with goals by Luis Angel Rey and Miguel Sabah putting the Monarcas up 3-0 at halftime.  A Steven Kinney goal early in the second half was immediately answered by Rafael Márquez, with new Monarch Jaime Lozano's 70th minute goal giving Morelia a 5-1 win to open Group B play.

For Major League Soccer faithful, the result reversed a strong start to the night that saw the New England earn three points from Pumas.  A flying, left-footed finish from Zack Schilawski on an early corner kick gave the Revolution the match's only goal.  The questionable waving-off of a second-half equalizer from Martín Bravo helped maintain the Revolution's 1-0 victory to open Superliga.

Today, Group A opens play, with Houston hosting Pachuca while Puebla visits Chivas USA.  Group B will resume play on Saturday, with Chicago hosting New England prior to Morelia and Pumas - a doubleheader at Toyota Park in Bridgeview.
