Dolphins Reportedly Interested In Cowboys DE Marcus Spears

Several reports have indicated that Dolphins DE Phillip Merling will miss the 2010 season with an Achilles injury. With a need for depth along the defensive line, the Dolphins could turn their attention to Cowboys DE Marcus Spears, according to the Miami Herald.

I have been in contact with a source saying the Dolphins may turn their attention before training camp is over to Dallas defensive end Marcus Spears, a starter who has fallen somewhat out of favor with the Cowboys and whom Bill Parcells drafted in the first round in 2005.

The Parcells connection is strong and I wouldn't be surprised to this happen.

Spears got a lower RFA tender than both of the men who backed him up and the report states Spears was available for trade before the draft so Merling's injury could set the stage for a trade.

Report: Dolphins DE Phillip Merling Injures Achilles, Out For Season

It's been quite a season for the Dolphins and their defensive line.

DE Phillip Merling was charged with felony battery. Nose tackle Jason Ferguson surprisingly retired.

If he's missing the year, then the injury is likely a torn Achilles, which is somewhat common among season-ending injuries.

The Dolphins haven't commented on the injury. It's important to note that the report states it came from a football workout. There was some speculation that it came during an non-football workout which could potentially give the Dolphins a chance to recover some money from him.

it's been quite a shakeup for the Dolphins defensive line. Randy Starks moved from end to nose tackle and will stay there after Ferguson's retirement. Defensive end Jared Odrick was drafted in the first round in April. Merling was set to compete with first round pick Jared Odrick for the starting defensive end job. I
