Bengals OT Andre Smith had a rough start to his rookie season after the Bengals made him a top 10 pick in 2009. After a 30-day holdout, Smith signed on Aug. 30, 2009 only to fracture his left foot a few days later causing him not to make his first NFL start until December 13.
The 2010 version of training camp isn't getting off to a much better start, writes Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.
Smith, who missed all of the last camp in a rookie holdout, was one of what appeared to be five players not suited up. The Bengals had hoped the foot surgery that knocked Smith out of all of the spring workouts would be healed enough for him to line up in the first practice, but he said it's not there yet and they don't want to rush it. As for when he'll return to practice, he said "I'm taking it day by day."
Hobson says Smith's goal is to miss just two preseason games.
