Shanoff's WUC: LeBron Drama To End Fittingly

Today's Calls: LeBron vs. Thursday night, Chris Bosh vs. Cleveland, Holland vs. World Cup Finals, Spain vs. Germany, Rockies vs. 9 Runs in the 9th, Mariano Rivera vs. Stephen Strasburg, Joey Votto vs. Kevin Youkilis, Seantrel Henderson vs. USC, Chris Duhon vs. Jameer Nelson, Bobby Gonzalez vs. Ralph Lauren, @KingJames vs. Twitter and More. ↵

↵The Opening Pitch: Can you hold out for one more day? ↵

↵

↵The LeBron saga will end predictably: Making his announcement on a nationally televised hour-long special in prime-time that will inevitably be watched by way more people than you ever thought. ↵

↵

↵To be honest, it is both fitting and fair. ↵

↵

↵Fitting, in that this has been the biggest circus in the history of player movement in sports. To have the news dribble out in a leak doesn't live up to the moment. ↵

↵

↵Fair, in that to have a single news outlet get the sports scoop of the century doesn't fit with LeBron's vision of himself as a global brand. Let everyone hear it at the same time. ↵

↵

↵Personally, I would have liked to see him announce it through Twitter, where he earned nearly 200,000 followers in less than 24 hours after launching his account yesterday afternoon. ↵

↵

↵But LeBron is someone who aspires to ubiquity. Frankly, it is unclear why he wouldn't open his decision to any TV network that wants to air it: NBC, Fox News Channel, The Food Network, YouTube -- who cares? ↵

↵

↵To be sure, 59 minutes of the program will be tough to take. But for that one minute when LeBron announces his decision, it is sports at its finest: Everyone tuning in, with genuine uncertainty in the balance and with a seismic impact on the game. ↵

↵

↵And yet: The look-at-me, made-for-TV event more earnestly illustrates LeBron's ambitions than anything else in this endless -- but ending! -- process. ↵

↵

↵One more day. ↵

↵

↵D-Wade and Chris Bosh won't wait: Apparently, they will announce today that Wade is re-signing with the Heat -- and Bosh will be joining him. If it holds, it is huge, obviously. Even with the Wade + Bosh + 9 minimum-salary players strategy, the Heat should be a contender in the East. Wade gets his running mate; Bosh gets his glitzy city. ↵

↵

↵And, perhaps more interestingly, LeBron is left alone, with a new calculus: Join Wade/Bosh in Miami? Go to Chicago and hope they can get Carlos Boozer? Go to New York and team with Amare? (Suddenly, a viable option!) Or stay in Cleveland and basically stand pat -- the least likely of all these scenarios. It makes the next 24 hours all the more intriguing. ↵

↵

↵World Cup: Oranje! Starting right about when the Dutch scored their first (and game-tying) goal against Brazil, there has been no bigger bandwagon than the Netherlands. From their day-glo all-orange uniforms yesterday to the cool-sounding system of "Total Football" to super-talent Wesley Sneijder, Holland has become a popular favorite. Now: Its first World Cup title is in sight. ↵

↵

↵Today: Spain-Germany. Germany has looked awesome; Spain is notorious for World Cup chokery. Your rooting interest should be Spain (they've never won the Cup); your more-than-likely winner is Germany. ↵

↵

↵MLB Talking Points: Comeback of the Year? Rox rally for 9 in 9th. It's unprecedented, so yes: Comeback of the Year. ↵

↵

↵All-Star Notes: ↵

↵

↵• Extra Man: Will Youk's injury hurt him? ↵

↵

↵• ASG Drop-outs: Rivera will sit out. ↵

↵

↵• Strasburg Watch: Didn't think himself ASG-worthy. ↵

↵

↵Awful stadium incident: Let's all hope the fan who fell 30 feet from the 2nd deck at the Rangers game turns out to be fine. ↵

↵

↵NFL Offseason: If the Titans pre-pay $2.5M in 2012 bonus money to Chris Johnson now, that doesn't really solve the underlying issue, which is that his salary is absurdly low and they seemingly refuse to do anything about it. ↵

↵

↵2011 NFL Draft: Christian Ponder? ↵

↵

↵Vick Watch: No charges filed. Let's move on to the next inevitable Vick drama. ↵

↵

↵CFB Offseason: Seantrel Henderson, the top-rated offensive lineman of the class of 2010, got out of his LOI to USC, as expected. (Would you want to play there the next three years?) The hot rumor is that he will go to Miami, but Ohio State is apparently in the mix, too. At this point, anywhere is an improvement over Kiffintown. ↵

↵

↵Countdown: No. 59 Mississippi State. Most agree that Dan Mullen has the Bulldogs headed in the right direction. The SEC West is brutal; bowl eligibility would qualify as a big move. ↵

↵

↵Non-LeBron NBA Free Agency: Chris Duhon signs with the Magic (4Y/$15), giving Orlando some depth at point guard ↵

↵

↵NBA Coaching Carousel: Vinny Del Negro wasn't good enough for the Bulls ... which apparently makes him perfect for the Clippers. ↵

↵

↵Tour de Lance: Doesn't feel like it's his year. ↵

↵

↵Crime: Bobby Gonzalez went from coaching Seton Hall to getting busted for shoplifting at Short Hills Mall. Previously, his rep was that he was a mouthy loser with questionable recruiting tastes. Hey, at least he's moved up to Ralph Lauren. ↵

↵

↵The Last Word: "Hello World, the Real King James is in the Building "Finally". My Brother @oneandonlycp3 gas'd me up to jump on board so I'm here. Haaaa" -- LeBron's first tweet. Eh. (But you can't knock getting 200,000 followers in one day.) ↵
