Chat Recap: See What Fans Discussed And Debated During The Pocono Race

Welcome to the SB Nation chat, a fine-free zone.

Discuss whatever you want (well, at least in relatively good taste) and spend your time chatting with us as you watch the Pocono NASCAR race today.

Since the race has an average time of nearly four hours, that leaves plenty of time for chatting. Hopefully, the race will give us plenty to talk about.

Make sure you click the "auto-refresh" button to see the latest comments from other fans and SB Nation's Jeff Gluck.

Before we get started, here are the results of our Twitter poll where we asked which driver would win today:

  1. Denny Hamlin – 37 votes
  2. Tony Stewart – 19
  3. Jeff Gordon – 16
  4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. – 9
  5. Kevin Harvick – 8
  6. Kasey Kahne – 7
  7. Mark Martin – 5
  8. Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards – 3
  9. Jeff Burton, Juan Pablo Montoya, Ryan Newman, AJ Allmendinger – 2

Four hours of racing!

Who’s ready? I actually have plenty of snacks today…I’m in it for the long haul.

Hopefully the rain is done (but I’m not counting on it).

National Anthem

Good rendition! I hate when performers get all hung up on themselves and ruin the song.

by Scampbell622 on Aug 1, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey Jeff!!

So is the race more fun for you from the couch or the track? : )

by Teri Polzin on Aug 1, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Well lets hope for a good race. And no rain

by Timsim38 on Aug 1, 2010 12:59 PM EDT reply actions

I see a record setting chat today. Boring long track and rain!

Good morning, Race Fans!

I have my first cup of coffee ready and I’m ready to race.

Are you at the track, Jeff?

Nope…I’m on my couch. I can’t do every race, so I figure out the ones I would rather skip…and Pocono is on that list.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

That's great

Your like the rest of us today.

why is brad daughtery a commentator?? he is an idiot

by Darrell Lanier on Aug 1, 2010 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

I like Brad. I think he does a good job.

by Holly Hedgepeth on Aug 1, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I would give my opinion, but I’d probably get blasted for it…

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont really mind him. But he always seems to excited. Kinda over doing it

by Timsim38 on Aug 1, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

He got hired around the same time as Nascar started their drive for diversity…

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably. He’s been a race fan since he was a kid so he’s no different than us except that he has way more money.

by Holly Hedgepeth on Aug 1, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I still find it funny that Daughtery is a NACAR commentator. People forget how great a basketball player he was until he hurt his knee.

by 49er16 on Aug 1, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

He got hired because he appeals to non-NASCAR fans. ESPN wanted to pull in another sport’s voice so non-fans tuning in would have recognition.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I like him because he genuinely loves NASCAR.

Exactly. He gets annoying sometimes, but he does a good job of bringing new fans who may else wise never watch a nascar race. I like that alot better than just recycling old crew chiefs and drivers.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree with that i just hate that brad talks like he has driven this track in a cup car.

by Darrell Lanier on Aug 1, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t you sound like you’ve been in a Cup car when you’re describing a situation to one of your NASCAR friends? I’m just saying.

by Holly Hedgepeth on Aug 1, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Wally’s World definitely needs to go away. It was fine the first but now it’s ho-hum.

by Holly Hedgepeth on Aug 1, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Jeff, print out this chat and give it to Mike Helton and Brian France

Maybe it will help show them how boring Pocono is and that the track needs 1 race, not 2

by BSargentOKC on Aug 1, 2010 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

Nothing will change their minds. Sorry. I used to have hope about that, but now I have reality.

I saw this at the start of NASCAR Countdown, too…and didn’t like it. Thought it was really lame.

by Holly Hedgepeth on Aug 1, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

They’re trying their hardest to convince us that this will be a compelling race, when we all know it won’t be.

They were pulling their hair out about Pocono, too!

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

okay so wouldn't everyone else be a little superstitious?

if you were involved with Nascar in ANY capacity would you fly anywhere? ever? How many tragic aviation accidents have befallen nascar drivers and crew members?

by Kaxxxxxx on Aug 1, 2010 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

How many of those have been piloted by the drivers/owners themselves though? Obviously not Hendrick, but many of the others.

Guys like Roush, Edwards, Mark Martin…they are very, very skilled pilots. But they’re not professionals. They don’t fly for a living.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. Maybe Jack just needs to drive. but on the other hand. If its his passion i can see why he does it.

by Timsim38 on Aug 1, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

does it really matter who's flying the plane?

there is a clear link between nascar and tragedy in the sky why press your luck to any degree? i’d hafta turn into John Madden and drive everywhere

by Kaxxxxxx on Aug 1, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

OK..I'm going to say it..

A SAFE pilot would NOT be flying himself to or from places after long days and most especially after driving a physical race of 3 + hours..

We have legislation in the airline industry for those very reasons…

Did he do the rally car stuff? That’s cool.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

He was in the booth with Paul Page. That rally car stuff was cool. The only problem is the course was so confusing that the drivers kept missing turns and were DQ.

i grew up a 5 minute walk from milwaukee mile … used to live at the fence all weekend every weekend

That’s cool…do you miss it? Pretty disappointing to see these Midwestern standalone tracks like Milwaukee, St. Louis and Memphis all going away.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

now i live not far from the vegas track but unless you count the bull ring out here they don’t keep this track nearly as busy as they did in milwaukee. Seemed like almost every weekend they used to have something going on there.

Jeff... your screen...

Jeff, your screen must look nuts on raceday! What do you usually have open? Twitter/Tweet Deck, your chat- what else? How do you pay attention to everything? ha!

by mandysuemccaul on Aug 1, 2010 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

I actually don’t use TweetDeck…it doesn’t update fast enough for me. I just use regular ol’ Twitter.com.

Right now I have two windows of Twitter (one for replies and one for the main feed), and one for this chat. Then my phone is chirping away with Sprint Cup mobile.

do u listen to any of the race chatter or driver radio

by Linda J Plummer on Aug 1, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

How is the Sprint Cup mobile app? Is there a delay on it? I’m an iphone addict, and that’s the one drawback. No official NASCAR app.

Looking forward to meeting you at the tweetup next weekend!

I downloaded it on my blackberry, and it’s pretty useless. But I think that’s a blackberry issue. Probably better on a droid type phone.

by kwms on Aug 1, 2010 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

Apparently the rain isn’t that heavy. The problem at Pocono is, it’s so huge it can be raining in one turn and totally dry in another.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Did everyone see that ESPN is making a doc on Tim Richmond?

The guy directing the movie has already directed NASCAR documentary’s before. I’m interested to watch it because Richmond was before my time.

2nd race in vegas

So I’m sure everyone heard about a second race in vegas is there any word on the date yet though? The worst thing nascar could do is have it here in June July or Aug 115 degrees no one will go and if they do they will only go once. It better be either be a chase race or very close to it.

by Kaxxxxxx on Aug 1, 2010 1:42 PM EDT reply actions

I think the talk is IF a 2nd date in Vegas, it’d at least be a chase date and most likely the last race of the season.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

i think vagas will take over fontana’s 2nd date, which is mid-oct time…

by Yuuk on Aug 1, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

it could

take california speedways second date and be a good bit cooler then maybe

by grrrowlguy on Aug 1, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’ll be the finale. that’s just me.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

NASCAR should end their season in Vegas, then they could have the final race and the award banquet there.

They probably will. You have the correct thinking there.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

it only makes sense

since all of the end of the year banquets and stuff are here anyway it only makes sense to have last race here.

by Kaxxxxxx on Aug 1, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Nascar says not enough time or publicitty for banquet if its right after the last race plus i heard homestead had a contract with title sponsorhip saying that it was the last race but thats all twitterverse talk lol

by grrrowlguy on Aug 1, 2010 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

i heard

i heard it aint homestead its ford the sponsor of the race at homestead that would pull out if it didn’t sponsor the final event

by Kaxxxxxx on Aug 1, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand not alot of time for publicity, but i think you’ll get more exposure if all the fans came for the race and stayed for the banquet. I don’t imagine you get a ton of fans who go to vegas just for the banquet.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d love to see Vegas cup race on Saturday night, then the banquet on Monday night. I never watch the banquet because by the time it rolls around 2 weeks after the season, my interest is in football and getting ready for christmas.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Not enough time..

For media and sponsor hoo haa if they do it the Monday after…

by Sky inLas Vegas on Aug 1, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Heck, they celebrate the super bowl championship on the field right after the game, and Lord knows, it seems like all nascar wants to do it be just like the NFL!

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Well guess it’s time to turn off the xbox and espn on. I haven’t even watched a single nascar thing so far this morning!

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, what I was thinking of was the minimum speed. That’s a percentage of happy hour speed…Although speed limit on the road courses is 35 so there must be some variable other than track length.

I will have weather updates if needed but now that I got my computer and TV back up and running it looks pretty good to our west. There could be isolated showers or storms that form but right now let’s race to halfway and go from there.

I am sorry that I was MIA on twitter during the rain delay, Laptop either over heated or crashed and then I lost my signal on DirecTV. Talking about DirecTV the race is blacked out here in Rochester NY.

Whoa! I’m glad we don’t get blacked out for racing in Alabama! I’d be pissed if they blacked out Talladega!

I'm gonna go ahead and say it:

Go Gordon! He looks alot better than he did at Indy last week!

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 1:59 PM EDT reply actions

I’m listening to him today for the 1st time ever – I like Dickerson, seeing how he does with a new driver.

Good idea…I just switched my scanner to the same thing!

Yeah, I wonder if Gordon desires all the details he gave Kyle.

That’s sad when you think about it. This race is so boring that we’re excited about little racing there is.

2011 schedule for Sprint

does anyone know the timeline of when they announce next year’s schedule for races?

by YarkerMommy on Aug 1, 2010 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

i want to know too..jeff, do you know?

by Yuuk on Aug 1, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

They always announce it by Labor Day

But I think they are getting more pressure than usual because of all the changes, so they may announce it sooner this year. Look for it in a few weeks.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

August 10 is the announcement for Kentucky. Think another track will have a much less publicized presser the same day?

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Well Daytona 500 is set because they’re already selling tickets for that race.

by BoggsofHazard on Aug 1, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

wow 24 pitstop

thats amazing they got 4 and still beat the biff out

by Kaxxxxxx on Aug 1, 2010 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

I think getting off pit road 1st is one of those things that Dickerson helped him with. He pushed Jeff in front of Biffle and helped him win the race off pitroad.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

What a cop out..

And I’m a Gordon fan..

Are you serious??

Puhlease…

by Sky inLas Vegas on Aug 1, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh?

Landon Cassil told me that little things like that has won Busch several races. He said he’d prob have 4 or 5 less wins without Dickerson.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Kyle has said before that Dickerson practically drives the car for him at some of these tracks.

A good spotter is certainly worth a few positions.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh what??

Jeff had the same WINNING spotter for years, then dumped him..

Ever since, he wants to blame a “spotter” rather than himself…

by 49er16 on Aug 1, 2010 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

I thought the same thing back on Lap 5. It’s like time is somehow warped in Pocono.

by BSargentOKC on Aug 1, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

They were talking about the new concrete having more grip. They should pave the top 20 feet all the way around this track. Love to see some guys hugging the wall around pocono!

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

Don’t think that will work – Pocono too flat

by MT Hundley on Aug 1, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

"Patch"

That would be one way to make the track more interesting…add a couple more patches.

And BTW…the “patch” is such a misnomer there. It’s a strip of pavement that goes from the end of Turn 2 all the way to the end of Turn 3…I did a pace car ride last year. It’s HUGE!

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

If you had “Vibration” or “Transmission” in the Start & Park Excuse office pool…you win!

by arails4 on Aug 1, 2010 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

Is Pocono adding a catchfence around the whole after this race?

I still can’t believe NASCAR wouldn’t sanction a race at a track that didn’t have that safety feature.

by BSargentOKC on Aug 1, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, we were typing messages about the exact same thing at the same time!

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably…but they are very far behind in several areas as far as track facilities and infrastructure.

For example, the internet connection there was installed during the stone age.

the 9 used those trees as a catch fence a few weeks ago

by soundguy79 on Aug 1, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m noticing how much of this track doesn’t have fencing on top of the wall. I can’t believe as fast as cars go here, there hasn’t been guys leaving the track (like Kahne almost did last year)

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, *last RACE, my bad. seems like years ago. haha

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

by MT Hundley on Aug 1, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant around the whole track.

by BSargentOKC on Aug 1, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

It’ll cost them a buttload of money. On the other hand, they did just spend $16 mil on a solar farm.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I think 100 is too short. For a cup race, I think 400 miles is the shortest it needs to be (other than short tracks)

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with 400 miles

by MT Hundley on Aug 1, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

300 miles at Pocono would be like 400 anywhere else.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

If (for some crazy reason) a pocono race went caution free, 100 laps would be over in just over an hour and half. I think pocono feels longer than it really is because the track doesn’t produce compelling racing.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d say 150 laps, but I’d gladly take 100 laps, too

how can team red bull?

be so good in every other racing series and so bad in Nascar?

by Kaxxxxxx on Aug 1, 2010 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Because the people currently behind the wheel are…well…not so good in a stock car?

by ObnoxiousSamGrl on Aug 1, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Currently? Yes.

I think Vickers is a hell of a driver. I feel bad that Red Bull doesn’t have him behind the wheel right now (for both of them). But I don’t think Scott has what it takes for stock cars. I just don’t.

That being said, there’s obviously a LOT wrong with Red Bull in NASCAR right now.

They need to get their…er…stuff…together.

by ObnoxiousSamGrl on Aug 1, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Because they don’t have Jimmie Johnson & Kyle Busch in their nascar cars. I bet they have really good equipment just don’t have the drivers…

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 1, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not surprised. Seems like alot of people have attempted to take their business models and run a nascar team and they always #fail. They have probably been the most successful “non-traditional” nascar team.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve thought that a million times. I don’t get it either. Is it money? Not sure. I am not crazy about the way Brian Vickers has been handling his time off. I’m sure it’s driven by money, but I think I’d consider him more of a “team player” if he would be more visible at the track while he’s out.

Rain showers forming to the West

Here is look at the forecast & radar – Showers are trying to come together to the west. They are 20 miles away. Good news they are slow movers and the heaviest have been north of I-80 (Track is south of I-80)

I still think we are racing to halfway and then any lap after that is a bonus.

Help me understand

There has been a whole heap of bitching about this race. Many of you seemed burdened to watch it. With the exception of our host I don’t think this is required viewing for any of us.

So my question is this: If you are so tortured by this race, why don’t you change the channel? Or turn of the TV and go outside? You could even run go get me a new bottle of Stoli if you wanted to.

I have never been able to get my arms around the concept that people will continue to do something that is neither profitable nor enjoyable.

by soundguy79 on Aug 1, 2010 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

QUESTION:

Everyone knows the season will always start with the Daytona 500.

But what is the ideal place for the second race of the season?

Is it a West Coast track? Is it Homestead? Is it somewhere else?

Remember…it’s February, so you can’t go somewhere very cold.

What do you say?

That's the tricky part

I was in Vegas this year for that race and it was raining. Probably the ideal place would be California because it hardly ever rains at Fontana. Homestead would also be a good place for the 2nd race.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

by BoggsofHazard on Aug 1, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

by soundguy79 on Aug 1, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that is why the Rock lost their races, february and november can be cold in this area. As for a 2nd, homestead (they could use 2 races)

by Linda J Plummer on Aug 1, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know that there really is an “ideal” place.

Someone, somewhere, is always going to get ticked off about where that second race is held. There’s always going to be one group of fans at odds with another group of fans because they want the race in their neck of the woods. Nature of the beast, so to speak.

Obviously, I’d love to see more racing in the midwest.

However, racing in the midwest in the winter? Bad idea.

I’m a realist and realize that we aren’t considered a “major market” for NASCAR.

At this point, I care less about where the races are and more about the quality of said races.

by ObnoxiousSamGrl on Aug 1, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

by grrrowlguy on Aug 1, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Gateway is a great track. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for people to justify spending the money to go to Gateway with the prices they will then have to pay for the Kansas weekend. It’s just too doggone expensive.

I think nascar needs to find a very exciting track for 2nd race. I think everyone gets hyped up for Daytona, then Fontana…They loose all the momentum they made during speedweeks.

Junior sure had a lot to say about the race at Darlington this year. He said that he didn’t know why we were there watching because he sure wouldn’t have been because it was too long. He was not complimentary about the track for sure. Since that is not as public as Twitter or live cameras I think they can get away with what they say over the radio.

Sports Question

Are the umpires/refs of all professional sports employed by the sports organization or are they 3rd party/independent employees?

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

If I recall correctly, they are independents.

by Holly Hedgepeth on Aug 1, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I know the NFL, MLB, and NBA employs their refs/umpires. The refs/umps in those leagues also have their own unions kind of like players.

The reason I ask that question, sometimes I feel like the nascar officials feel they are responsible for putting on a good race while in other sports, the officials are responsible for putting on a fair race.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a feeling the 11 is the last thing Gordon and Johnson wanna see on their bumper. I think he’ll be leading soon.

by jshaunburke on Aug 1, 2010 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

I just don't understand JJ's luck

It’s amazing. I’m not saying most of it isn’t talent, b/c he’s a great driver, but he is also VERY lucky. I don’t think NASCAR actually has anything to do with it because it wouldn’t do them much good to irritate everyone but JJ fans, but he seems to be helped out A LOT by fortuitous debris cautions, etc. Maybe it just seems to happen a lot b/c I don’t care for him so I always think his good luck outweighs the bad luck?

by asc82005 on Aug 1, 2010 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

In any sport, you need a little luck. As you can tell by my user name, I’m a 49ers fan. They were perhaps the luckiest team in the NFL for 15 straight years, winning 5 Super Bowls, receiving all the right breaks at the right time. Eventually though luck runs out.

Luck ran out on the 49ers and it could run out for JJ.

from a

scene daily article from june 12th

Pocono Raceway owner Doc Mattioli has said he cannot pave the grass area because of a recent law that limits additional paving in the area to 5,000 square feet. NASCAR could ask track officials to replace the grass with gravel

by grrrowlguy on Aug 1, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if local law won’t work with the track/nascar to pave it, then take the race away. Threaten the local economy with losing multi million dollars of revenue and I bet they’ll let them pave it!

1 of 2 things would happen when I car goes over gravel at 180. I’ll just fly over it or it’ll dig in and go flipping.

Exactly

My friend lipped his car on a gravel road. It’s 10 times worse than grass.

I can handle Logano or Edwards winning on rain because they have the ability to win non rain races. If Hornish wins after having no business winning it, this is bad for the sport.
