Here is the full statement from 49ers RB Glen Coffee on his retirement from the NFL at the age of 23:
This has been a tough decision for me, but at this time in my life I feel it's best for me that I move on from football. I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future.
49ers beat writer Matt Barrowss says Coffee was "as dedicated as anyone in the offseason, adding more than 10 pounds of muscle."

RB Glen Coffee didn't show up to the San Francisco 49ers training camp practice on Friday and no reason was given for his absence. 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco said in response, "That doesn't sound good."
It's not good -- at least for the 49ers. Coffee released a statement announcing he is retiring from football.
He is just 23 years old and was a 2009 third round pick by the 49ers. There's no word on what specifically caused him to come to this decision.
Head coach Mike Singletary said the decision "came out of the blue" and he appreciated his honesty.
So how do the 49ers fill the void?
Michael Robinson now becomes the No. 2 runner. Singletary says rookie Dixon is "a ways away" from being an NFL runner.
