Chat Recap: See What Fans Had To Say During The Michigan NASCAR Race

Kevin Harvick picked up an important victory on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, proving he can win on downforce tracks as well as in restrictor-plate races.

Harvick's win helped give credibility to his Sprint Cup Series points lead, which he had gained through consistency but not necessarily domination.

With just three races now remaining until the Chase, Harvick seems to have picked up speed at the right time.

Denny Hamlin – who has been in search of a resurgence – finished second, followed by Carl Edwards.

Check out what fans on SB Nation had to say as the race unfolded on Sunday.

OMG

Do they not listen to these people before booking them – hands down worst anthem this year.

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That wasn’t pretty at all.

by Chef Dodge on Aug 15, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

At least he got all the words unlike some other anthem singers.

Anthem

Holy crap, the worst by far!

by BoggsofHazard on Aug 15, 2010 1:03 PM EDT reply actions

I'm skipping today's race

Michigan bores me and the 49ers play their first preseason game right now.

Hamlin is my pick.

It's blackout in this area

But it’s on the NFL Network. They’re playing the Colts.

My pick (or jinx)

Jimmie Johnson wins today. The reason is, he hadn’t won at Bristol or Sonoma until this year either, so he finally gets it done at Michigan today.

I say Denny LOSES it thanks to a debris caution, haha

by Shaggy_5150 on Aug 15, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

by grrrowlguy on Aug 15, 2010 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually don’t think the rain will hold together. There’s a cell moving ENE and a cell moving ESE… Might split MIS. Or might converge and soak the track.

Well Kyle Busch up four spots in two laps no matter what people think he can drive

by Len_DiJoseph on Aug 15, 2010 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

I think he can drive...

it’s just can he win a championship that’s the question.

Can Kyle be consistent enough and keep his head in the game enough to become a champion??

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus you know if you look back at say DW and most guys who win titles with the exception of Jeff Gordon most guys are winning titles in their late twenties and through mid 30’s.

by Len_DiJoseph on Aug 15, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I think kyle can

not sure about this year they gotta find some speed headed to the chase but you never know. I didnt pick kurt to in it in 2004 and he did

by grrrowlguy on Aug 15, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He is getting there, I mean after what happened last week at that track where going to the back is a major disaster and finishing 8th I do not think that happens in the past. But he has a lot of room for improvement

by Len_DiJoseph on Aug 15, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

by jr88freak on Aug 15, 2010 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

He has been close in the chase before finished 2nd I believe so he knows what to do so I think he could be a dark horse this year. Plus he has been the strongest car at RFR all year despite the early struggles..

Approaching Rain

There are other meteorologists here in the Michigan Media Center. We estimate rain moving about 20 mph. Sprinkles are 10 miles away but good news the cell I am watching is weakening.

Tough call going to say rain in about 30-40 min BUT could die and miss us so there is a silver lining. Here is a look at radar.

Kurt saying "catastrophic" engine failure

I remember in 2004 when Kurt Busch blew up at Atlanta (the year he won the championship)…he called it a “catastrophic” failure of the engine, as he did today.

Stuart Scott LIT HIM UP on SportsCenter that night for saying “catastrophic” because Stuart said, “The Hendrick plane crash — THAT was catastrophic.”

Little did Stu Scott know that “catastrophic” is a legit technical term to describe the engine failure.

Idiot.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

NASCAR is definately not Stuart's forte..

He should stick with “I Love the 80’s..”

;)

by Sky inLas Vegas on Aug 15, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Right on

Totally agree, plus the plane crash was a tragedy, the engine failure is catastrophic.

Dickerson

Saw some talk about people listening to Dickerson/Gordon on the radio.

Had a friend ask me this last week: Is Dickerson the most high-profile spotter?

Can’t remember another spotter making news like Dickerson has from one driver to another.

But is that because Dickerson is chummy with the media so we cover it? Or is a legit story because his relationship with Kyle Busch dissolved?

Thoughts?

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

D

All of the above!

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but

doesn’t he do more than just spot?

by MT Hundley on Aug 15, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Dickerson did go from Kyle to Gordon two high profile drivers, plus I mean Kyle did make it sound like getting Dickerson in 2008 was the greatest thing ever and now he is out in two years so the drama of Kyle also enhances it.

by BoggsofHazard on Aug 15, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, that was terrible.

However, what an awful judgement call to let the fans stand so close to the track. Very bad idea by the promoter. Let’s hope we never see anything like that in NASCAR.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

What was crazy is the fans who weren’t paying attention after that truck flipped and were standing in the middle of the course while other trucks weren’t aware of the crash. I was certain one of them was going to get hit.

NW vs Cup

We always see average cup drivers dominate in nationwide. I understand the cars are different, etc. But now with the new car…I don’t understand how Brad K kicks everyone’s butt yesterday and is so bad today! I mean, the new nationwide cars are old cup cars AND it’s pretty much the same drivers!

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Dodge

I think Dodge put a TON of time and energy into that new Nwide car…

Penske is still a bit behind on Cup in some areas.

News: Tony Stewart takes the lead

Views: After Tony was quoted saying there were some “bad eggs” in the media yesterday, forgive me if I don’t want to see this guy win today. He has made it a habit to show little respect for both media and fans.

Media, yes..Fans, no..

I have been to more Tony events than I would like to admit to, including, standing in the rain on Thanksgiving at a Turkey day sprint race, and he staying longer to get all the autographs signed than the track wanted him to..

He has ALWAYS been good with the fans..

This from Wikipedia

After an off-key performance of the National Anthem at a televised NASCAR event in March, 2005, Montgomery confirmed on his website that he had a condition known as acoustic neuroma, which is a non-cancerous growth that interferes with a nerve running between the brain and the ear. This condition can affect balance and hearing and can certainly make singing or any kind of public performing quite difficult for the patient. The problem was corrected, however, and did not alter Montgomery’s touring schedule for the rest of 2005.

a bit of both even jr said himself he is driving the new car too hard

by grrrowlguy on Aug 15, 2010 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

2008 chase he entered 4th. Sounds like he knew what he was doing to me. I think he might have been throwing some blame on himself just for the hell of it with that comment. The cars been in use sine ‘07 and he’s had good runs in it.

Hmm, who knows.

by Joelg88 on Aug 15, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

They did swap people who worked on the 5 last year and they won a bunch of races and it hasn’t helped and now both the 5 and 88 are never on par with the golden boys. But Jr could be still having problems with adjusting to the new car but anyone’s guess is as good as mine. I think he should try and get his team up to the cup level when his contract with HMS is up.

Hey Jeff you I don’t thin Jr. is the best out on the track but he is defintly beteer tan a 25th to 30th pace driver. You think he can stand this for two more years?

by rbdew88 on Aug 15, 2010 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

Not two more years. If it’s like this next year, there will be a change for sure. McGrew will go.

difference

Man the difference between the 248 shop and the 5 88 shop is just so night and day you wouldn’t even know they were from the same organization? Is there that much interaction between those two shops? I mean you look at he track and like on the war wagon covers clipboards you see the hendrick motorsports emblem and 24 48 just looks like a little more seperation between the two than is lead on, i dunno just an observation from outside lookin in

Might win yet – How sad is it that I’ve never been a Gordon fan. Only following becuase of Dickerson.,. WTF?

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

WOW! Now THAT is amazing.

Kind of speaks to my thought of Dickerson being a high-profile spotter.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve said it many times, I’m a completely irrational fan! As KB knocks the f’n wall down….

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Now what

I’m in twitter jail… this totally bites.

by jr88freak on Aug 15, 2010 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

Thankfully Gluck doesn’t put you in sbnation.com jail!

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

but not in chat jail

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you try the main Twitter.com website?

I don’t use Tweetdeck…if you use Twitter.com you have unlimited tweets.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I use twitter.com. You can only tweet so much. Heard about it, never actually have it happen before.

by jr88freak on Aug 15, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? That’s strange…even I’ve never had that happen on twitter.com.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I find that hard to believe

I used to follow Kevin Smith. Talk about overtweeting.

by soundguy79 on Aug 15, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe tweet limit is proportional to the number of followers you have…?

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

No idea. It’s irritating as hell.

by jr88freak on Aug 15, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Letarte

tells gordon, everyone is close on fuel but he’s greenlight from here

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

Nice to see David Ragan leading, even if he needs more fuel.

by Rob Wright on Aug 15, 2010 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

Twilight Zone

Wow I just heard David Ragan in the lead

by Len_DiJoseph on Aug 15, 2010 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

Well, he stayed out and didn’t pit…

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Well guess that ensure no fuel mileage race.

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

Every time I see that save by Newman, the more impressed I am with it!

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

Now we’re going to get a shootout-type finish…love that.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

Going to be exciting now!!!

by MT Hundley on Aug 15, 2010 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

Gordon's radio

Who’s listening to Gordon’s radio? That was a very impressive exchange between Dickerson, Gordon, and Letarte.

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed. I was listening to that as well.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I am – it’s why I want him back on the 18.

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s not going to happen. Kyle and he are done.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure you are right, I still don’t like it. :)

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Big One

We have the potential for a Dega style crash here!

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:46 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, too bad we have no idea what he said after that! Sounded important!

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

something about another failure – red lights

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I have been a DJ fan

for a long time, but can someone evplain to him that “hisself” is not a word?

by soundguy79 on Aug 15, 2010 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

ACK!

Bad time for a commercial with 20 to go!! It was just getting good!!!

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

get it out of the way – maybe stay for the rest (probably wishful thinking)

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Gordon now fighting hard to not be in last place. Amazing…

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

I'm thinking Porky..

If Denny and Happy keep racing each other so hard..

by Sky inLas Vegas on Aug 15, 2010 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

Porky? I thought you liked TS?

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

His sponsor used to be..

“Pork…the other white meat…”

hence the nickname…

Bwuhahahahha!

;)

by Sky inLas Vegas on Aug 15, 2010 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Had to look to see who was in 3rd…. should have known. lol

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Can’t argue with that…

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I stand corrected – If Denny’s not mad, guess 29 wasn’t such a “jerk” after all….

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

A boring race at Atlanta is still the best downforce race of the season, IMO

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

should say, a boring race, by Atlanta’s standards

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I like these two guys

So I won’t be mad just want a good clean battle

by Len_DiJoseph on Aug 15, 2010 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

Come on!

Caution please! I want Hamlin to get another shot!

by Chef Dodge on Aug 15, 2010 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

White flag for Kevin Harvick

Well done for that team.

And they’ll announce Budweiser this week!

Not too shabby.

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 4:06 PM EDT reply actions

Now that he won on a non super speedway track he is a legit Chase contender and really just building for the chase unlike Stewart and Busch did when they had the points lead in 08 and 09

by Len_DiJoseph on Aug 15, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I totally agree with you!

by Jeff Gluck on Aug 15, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

i think he clinched to chase as of now too.

by Yuuk on Aug 15, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, the good news is….next time the cup cars are on the track it will be BRISTOL BABY!!!!

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

denny came back quite strong today….he started from quite back!

by Yuuk on Aug 15, 2010 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

KB's closing words...

“Sorry guys – as usual, I’m pathetic”

DR – something about being behind him

KB – “I wouldn’t stand behind my sorry ass.”

by kwms on Aug 15, 2010 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

Wasn’t the pocono race you missed earlier last month slightly enjoyable too. Hmm, you better not stink up Bristol by coming ;)

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

ha-ha, yeah something happened to the car at the end. I think he peaked too early. I hope he can regroup the next few weeks and get some momentum going into the chase!

by jshaunburke on Aug 15, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

it was a great race for a track thats not known for that. Thanks again for the chat Jeff!! See you next week!

by Len_DiJoseph on Aug 15, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions
