The San Francisco 49ers on Monday traded defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer to the Seattle Seahawks according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
The details of the trade aren't yet known but Jason La Canfora of NFL Network says it will likely be a late round pick when the details are finalized.
This is interesting timing because Balmer was excused from practice last Wednesday and when he didn't show on Thursday the 49ers said it was not an excused absence.
"If Kentwan wanted to be here, he'd be here," coach Mike Singletary said.
The 49ers reportedly sent him a "five-day letter" on Thursday which would have given them the right to place him on the reserve/left list. If they followed through on that, it would have ended his season.
He was a 2008 first round pick and didn't appear to be cracking the starting lineup in 2010. He had also previously expressed his frustration with his spot on the depth chart so his unhappiness didn't completely come out of the blue.
The man who drafted Balmer in San Francisco, former GM Scot McCloughan, is now with the Seahawks.

Seahawks Give Up A Sixth Round Pick In Kentwan Balmer Trade
The San Francisco 49ers on Monday traded disgruntled defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer to the Seattle Seahawks.
According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, the 49ers will receive a sixth round pick in return.
For the 49ers, that's quite the diminishing value. In 2008, they spent the 29th overall pick in the draft on him.
He never panned out for them and never even started a game in two seasons.
