Aaron Schobel Opts For Retirement Despite Interest From Texans

Former Buffalo Bills defensive end Aaron Schobel's has made his decision: He's retiring.

The Bills released Schobel several weeks ago after he had yet to report to training camp while he mulled retirement. The Texans expressed interest and head coach Gary Kubiak had even said he and Schobel had talked.

“Obviously, it would have been a great place to play, but at point of my career, I’m not going to sit here and tell you how I would have performed,” he said today. “I’m not saying I could or couldn’t have played at my best, but I’m just not 100 percent sure.

“I want to be done with it. I’m going to leave it as is. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to play, anyway. I’m going to be 33 in two weeks, and I’m leaving the game on my terms and nobody else’s. I’m just going to leave it alone and retire.”

Many people had figured that the Bills made a mistake releasing him from his contract even though it would have been hard to trade him with an $8 million salary due in 2010.

SB Nation Boston has plenty of details on the former Bills decision to retire. Also check out the reaction on Schobel's retirement from Bills fans at Buffalo Rumblings.

Aaron Schobel Has Talked With Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak

Aaron Schobel has yet to determine whether he'll play football in 2010 but, if he does, there's at least one team interested.

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said on Wednesday that he has talked to Schobel about playing in 2010.

Kubiak says Schobel has yet to decide if he'll play but the two sides will be in touch as the process moves along.

Schobel is from Texas so early reports suggested he would consider the Texans.

It's Official: Bills Release Aaron Schobel

The Bills made it official on Wednesday announcing the release of Aaron Schobel.

Schobel, 32, now becomes a free agent free to sign with any team.

He tells BuffaloBills.com that he's yet to make a definite decision whether he'll retire or continue playing.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Schobel stated via text to Buffalobills.com. “I’m going to take a week and then maybe, I would say within a two week period I’m going to go one way or the other, that’s for sure. I’m either going to try to get it going or I’m going to put my (retirement) papers in. That’s what I’ll do.”

Report: Bills Will Release Aaron Schobel On Wednesday

After GM Buddy Nix announced the Bills were moving on from Aaron Schobel, we said that Nix's words didn't really mean anything until Schobel was actually released.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, that will come today. The Bills will release Schobel and he plans on signing with a new team.

For the Bills, it's a perplexing move. His age and his salary likely make it nearly impossible to trade him but it's hard to imagine why they would let him walk without getting anything in return.

SB Nation's Buffalo Rumblings weighs in:

Unless the Bills decided that they wanted to do Schobel perhaps the biggest favor of his life, I don't get the logic behind this decision. As an unrestricted free agent, the market for Schobel's services could be significant, and Buffalo didn't technically have to do anything with him. On the Reserve/Did Not Report list, he didn't count against the team's active roster, and the team could have left him there indefinitely.

There's no word on who might be interested but Schefter speculates that Houston, Schobel's hometown, could be interested.

GM Buddy Nix Announces Bills Are Moving On Without Aaron Schobel

The Buffalo Bills are transitioning to a 3-4 defense which would make Aaron Schobel a linebacker and not a defensive end, the position he's played since the Bills drafted him in 2001.

Schobel was contemplating retirement over the offseason and ultimately didn't report to Bills training camp last week which caused the team to place him on the Reserve/Did Not Report list.

Now Bills GM Buddy Nix announced they're moving on without Schobel, according to SB Nation's Buffalo Rumblings.

"Aaron has been contemplating retirement for the past seven months, but we are at the point where we are moving forward and have informed his agent of our plans. Aaron has been a very good player for the Bills and we wish him and his family the best, but there comes a point where we have to move forward and that point is today. We are focusing on the team’s best interests."

Schobel acknowledged the move and indicated he understood where they were coming from.

"I heard it, I'm fine with it. I'm a little bit relieved and I definitely understand where they're coming from. They're trying to move on and rebuild and do what they need to do to give themselves the best chance, and they don't want some guy just interrupting it. So I understand, and I appreciate everything Buffalo did for me."

The announcement doesn't necessarily change much. The Bills will still own his contract rights. If he chose to come back, they would have to release him, trade him or let him come back. They can't lock him out of training camp.

While it appears this is the end of Schobel in Buffalo, the door isn't quite completely closed.
